The lovely Miss Elizabeth was the defining female manager of the 1980s
and served to pave the way for a new generation of women in the wrestling
industry. She began her career working in broadcasting for her father and
through her work there, she met her first husband Randy Savage and his
father, the promoter Angelo Poffo. They married in December of 1984 in
Kentucky and it wasn't long before Randy Savage was signed by the World
Wrestling Federation.
A storyline developed where Savage was to choose his manager, as many were
itching to sign this hot prospect. Savage turned down Freddie Blassie,
Mr. Fugi, Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan and a host of others and brought out
Miss Elizabeth to shock the world. Elizabeth was a young beauty and her
appearances brought Savage growing fame. In 1985, Savage defeated Tito
Santana to become the new WWF Intercontinental Champion before entering
a feud with George "The Animal" Steele, who had become infatuated with
Elizabeth. Savage defeated Steele at Wrestlemania 2 in a title defense
and feuded with Rick Steamboat, whose larynx he crushed, leading to a Wrestlemania
3 classic where Savage lost the gold in front of 93,173 fans.
Randy Savage was gaining popularity, despite his heel status, and was attacked
by the Hart Foundation and the Honkey Tonk Man in a WWF Saturday Nights
Main Event show where Honkey Tonk threw Elizabeth down. Elizabeth proved
the catalyst for the Mega Powers, as she enlisted HUlk Hogan's help to
save Savage. Elizabeth would become the manager of both Hogan and Savage
until the jealousy of Savage began to disrupt the Mega Powers. Savage won
the WWF World Title in a tournament at Wrestlemania IV, but by Wrestlemania
V, the Mega Powers had exploded and Elizabeth was caught in the middle.
She would be in a neutral corner at Wrestlemania V but quickly sided with
Hulk Hogan as the spring turned to summer. Elizabeth was in the corner
of Hogan and Beefcake as they defeated Savage and Zeus at Summer Slam 1989
and then Elizabeth left the spotlight. She would return occasionally and
managed the team of Dusty Rhodes and Sweet Sapphire in victories over the
Randy Savage, as the Macho King, and the Queen Sensational Sherri.
Elizabeth once again left the spotlight, but returned during the Wrestlemania
VII Career Match between Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. Savage lost that
match, but the real story came afterwards as Sherri began to kick and slap
Savage as he laid injured in the ring. Elizabeth, who had been sitting
in the audience, jumped the railing, ran to the ring and threw Sherri out
of the ring and, in one of the most emotional and wonderful moments in
wrestling history, Savage and Elizabeth reunited as audience members cried
tears of joy. Savage went to the broadcast booth and Elizabeth appeared
sparingly, but during the summer the fans got a huge surprise when Savage
walked down to the ring, called out Elizabeth and told her "I love you"
before proposing marriage. In another emotional moment, Elizabeth said
"Oh yeah" and they were married in the ring at Summer Slam 1991, though
they had been married in real-life since 1984. As the two opened their
gifts, Jake Roberts and the Undertaker crashed the party as a Cobra jumped
out at Elizabeth from one of the gift boxes, leading to one of the most
violent feuds of the early 1990s in the WWF. In one of the most disturbing
events, Savage was bitten by a Cobra on an edition of WWF Superstars as
Elizabeth screamed in horror at ringside with Roddy Piper and others holding
her back for her own safety. Savage was reinstated as a wrestler by President
Jack Tunney and went on to defeat Jake at This Tuesday in Texas and then
again on Saturday Nights Main Event. Savage and Elizabeth's magic was once
again in full swing and the WWF Champion Ric Flair took notice and began
claiming that he was Elizabeth's first love. Flair and Savage met at Wrestlemania
VIII in a classic bout where Savage won his second WWF Title with Elizabeth
at his side.
Sadly, Elizabeth left the WWF in the summer of 1992 when she and Savage
divorced. She would stay retired from wrestling until 1995 when Eric Bischoff
signed her to manage Savage and Hogan against Ric Flair and the Dungeon
of Doom. Elizabeth turned heel on her own, in a shocker, helping Ric Flair
defeat Savage for the WCW World Title at Superbrawl VI in 1996 before becoming
the heel valet of the Horsemen. Elizabeth joined the NWO and when Savage
rejoined, the two became a heel dream team and feuded with DDP and Kimberly.
Elizabeth had a second marriage that only lasted a few months and began
dating Lex Luger in 1998. She returned to WCW as the valet for Luger and
Kevin Nash. Elizabeth was treated poorly on camera and in real life by
Luger as a victim of abuse. Luger and Elizabeth were living together when
Elizabeth passed away due to an overdose on pain pills and alcohol. She
is another example of a sad end for a classic star but we should remember
that she pioneered the divas of wrestling. She took part in the glory days
of the WWF in the 1980s and can be seen as one of their most significant
stars of the time. She will be remembered as a class act and as a media
darling, and belongs here in the UWOW Hall of Fame.
