Whether you know him as Handsome or as the King, there's no doubt you KNOW
who Harley Race is! He's the former 7 time NWA World Heavyweight Champion
and a wrestling institution.
Race competed in the AWA in his early days teaming with Larry "The Axe"
Hennig to win several tag team titles before switching over to the NWA
where he defeated Dory Funk Jr to capture the NWA World Heavyweight Title
in 1973 before losing it to Jack Brisco 4 months later. Race regained the
title by defeating another UWOW Hall of Fame Terry Funk in 1977 and held
on to it for nearly 2 years before Dusty Rhodes took the gold in 1979.
Harley won two more titles at the expense of the Nature Boy Ric Flair before
falling out with the NWA.
Handsome Harley Race joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1986 when
his regional promotion out of St. Louis collapsed and all rights were sold
to Vince McMahon due to a dispute with the NWA over the World Championship.
Race joined the Heenan Family under UWOW Hall of Famer Bobby "The Brain"
Heenan and reigned as the King of the WWF when he won the very first King
of the Ring Tournament that year. Race went on to feud with King Tonga
and others before a tremendous feud with the Junk Yard Dog lead to Harley's
biggest WWF win at Wrestlemania 3 in front of 97,173 fans when he pinned
the JYD in a match where the loser would have to bow before the winner.
Harley took part in the first two Survivor Series events and also had a
series of matches with then WWF Champion Hulk Hogan before turning in to
a fan favourite and feuding with the King Haku and the Heenan Family.
Race moved back to the NWA, now WCW, as a manager to many including a young
Kevin Nash as Vinnie Vegas, Hercules Hernandez as Super Invader, and Paul
Orndorff but his biggest achievement as a manager came in managing the
previously unknown Big Van Vader to three WCW World Titles before a car
accident ended Race's managing career. Race would retire from the spotlight
to start a wrestling school and promote cards under the WLW banner.
Harley Race was honoured
by the WWE as part of the Class of 2004 as part of the Wrestlemania XX
weekend. He was previously honoured by the WWE in 1997 for having been
part of the rich tradition of St. Louis wrestling alongside Lou Thesz,
the Funks and Sam Muchnick. Ric Flair said it best in saying that Harley
Race is simply "the man". Race is nothing short of a class-act and truly
deserving of his placement in the UWOW Hall of Fame! |
