William Dee Calhoun was born in 1934 in Morgan's Corner Arkansas and made
his professional wrestling debut in the late 1950s, taking on the gimmick
Haystacks Calhoun. Standing at 6'4 and weighing between 450 and 600+ pounds,
Calhoun was a major super heavyweight. He wrestled mainly in the United
States, but also competed in Australia and Canada. He formed a tag team
with another monsterous 600+ pound Mountain Man Mike in Vancouver, Canada
but it would be with Don Leo Jonathan that Calhoun became one half of the
NWA Canadian Tag Team Champions.
In one of the classic moments in wrestling history, Calhoun battled and
defeated Happy Humphrey who weighed 750 pounds. Calhoun, at his size, was
not a classic wrestler but proved a very capable sports entertainer and
became famous the world over, gaining mainstream publicity for some of
his matches with Happy Humphry and Mountain Man Mike. Calhoun wore overalls
and a lucky horse-shoe to the ring, inspiring the Godwinn Family, Uncle
Elmer, Hillbilly Jim and a host of other Hillbilly gimmicks. If you want
to talk wrestling history, one can hardly forget to mention Haystacks Calhoun
and surely, this man, Haystacks Calhoun, belongs here in the UWOW Hall
of Fame.
