"Ooooooooooooh Yeeeeah", the Macho Man has entered the UWOW Hall of Fame,
"DIG IT?". Randy was destined for greatness, being the eldest son of wrestling
promoter Angelo Poffo and the brother of future wrestling star Leaping
Lanny Poffo, who also appeared for the WWF as the Genius in the 1980s and
early 1990s. Randy didn't initially start off as a wrestler, instead becoming
a minor leage baseball star for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinatti Reds
and Chicago White Sox over five years while wrestling a little on the side
for his father, often under a mask.
Savage wrestled his first match in November of 1973 as "The Spider" and
quickly went full time, wrestling in Georgia and Florida among others.
He would win his first title with partner Ole Anderson, taking the Southeastern
Tag Team Championship before taming with his brother Lanny to win the Southern
Tag Team Titles under the name Randy Poffo. Randy wouldn't keep the Poffo
name for long, though, after Ole Anderson called Randy a SAVAGE in the
ring and, of course, the rest was history for Randy Savage. His father
founded International Championship Wrestling in the late 1970s and wore
the ICW World title in 1979 after defeating his brother Lanny. Savage joined
the competition in Jerry Lawler's AWA territory in Memphis and won the
AWA International title from Austin Idol in 1984. Once ICW folded, Angelo
and Lanny Poffo joined Randy in the AWA and the brothers would go on to
feud with the Rock-n-Roll Express and the AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion
Jerry Lawler, turning heel in the process. Savage and Lawler went on to
have a gory feud with several steel cage matches, culminating in a Loser
Leaves Town match that sent Savage packing for New York.
Randy Savage joined the World Wrestling Federation and took on the name
"Macho Man" as all the managers of the WWF sought to sign him to a contract.
On an edition of WWF Superstars, the ring filled with managers Mr. Fugi,
Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan, Luscious Johnny Valiant and others as the Macho
Man prepared to make his announcement. Savage shocked the world, bringing
down an unknown beauty named Elizabeth to serve as his manager. In reality,
Savage had married Elizabeth in 1984 but this marriage was never acknowledged,
though it was booked in such a way to suggest the two were dating. Savage
took part in the Wrestling Classic supercard, losing in the finals to Junkyard
Dog, but established himself as a top draw for the WWF in the process.
He went on to defeat Tito Santana in February of 1986 to win the WWF Intercontinental
Title and became a perennial challenger to Hulk Hogan's WWF World Title.
Savage would move on to a feud with George "The Animal" Steele who, by
then, was a long standing WWF heel turned fan favourite in light of his
deep affection for Elizabeth. Steele even kidnapped Elizabeth during an
edition of WWF Superstars, though the Macho Man rescued her. The feud raged
on with Savage defending successfully against Steele at Wrestlemania 2.
Savage moved on to the legendary feud with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
where Savage jumped off the top rope to the arena floor, crushing Steamboat's
larynx over the steel barricade. Steamboat finally returned with George
Steele's help and encouragement and defeated Savage in front of 93,173
fans at the Pontiac Silverdome at Wrestlemania III in a match that stole
the show and inspired generations of talent, including Chris Jericho who
says that match made him want to be a wrestler.
The popularity of the Macho Man exploded as a result of the classic encounter
and it wasn't long before Savage challenged the NEW Intercontinental Champion,
the heel Honkey Tonk Man. On an edition of Saturday Night's Main Event,
Savage defeated Honkey by disqualification when Jimmy Hart interfered.
It wasn't what happened during the match that made history, but what happened
after as the Honkey Tonk Man, Jimmy Hart and the Hart Foundation beat Savage
down in the ring and Honkey prepared to hit Savage with his guitar. Elizabeth,
showing great courage, stood in harm's way to try and protect Savage but
in a moment that fortified Honkey's heel status, he threw Elizabeth to
the ground, breaking her dress. Elizabeth ran to the back and Savage took
the guitar shot, but it wasn't long before the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan
hit the ring to clean house and engage Savage in the handshake felt all
around the world, forming the Mega Powers! The two were great friends,
even as Hulk Hogan lost the WWF Title controversially to Andre the Giant,
setting up the vacation of the title and the huge 14-man, single elimination
tournament at Wrestlemania IV.
Hulk Hogan was expected to regain his title but, in a big surprise, Hogan
was eliminated in the first round by virtue of a double disqualification
with Andre. It seemed that Savage would get his big break, defeating Butch
Reed, Greg Valentine and the One Man Gang before meeting Ted DiBiase in
the finals. With Andre in DiBiase's corner, and interfering constantly,
Elizabeth ran to the back just like before and brought out Hogan to lend
a helping hand. With Savage in the Million Dollar Dream, Hogan hit the
ring to smash DiBiase with a chair, allowing Savage to scale the ropes
and hit the flying elbow smash to become the new WWF World Heavyweight
Champion. The Mega Powers were on a roll and began wrestling tag team bouts
against Andre the Giant and Ted DiBiase, while Savage defended the title
in classic matches against DiBiase, One Man Gang, Greg Valentine and even
Virgil on WWF Superstars. The Mega Powers would go on to headline the first
Summer Slam in 1988, defeating Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant with Jesse
Ventura as the special guest referee. The Mega Powers then went on to be
the sole survivors at the 1988 Survivor Series, co-captaining a team of
Hillbilly Jim, Koko B. Ware and Hercules against Ted DiBiase, the Red Rooster,
Haku and the new #1 enemies of the Mega Powers, the Twin Towers combination
of Big Bossman and Akeem. The Bossman and Akeem wrestled several tag bouts
against the Mega Powers and the feud spilled over into the second WWF Royal
Rumble in 1989 when Savage was accidentally eliminated by Hogan. It was
after this that the Mega Powers nearly came to blows and probably would
have if not for Elizabeth, who got between them. The writing was on the
wall, though, as Hogan and Elizabeth became closer and Savage got more
jealous. The Mega Powers teamed for the last time on an edition of the
Main Event, defeating the Twin Towers but during the match Savage was thrown
out of the ring onto Elizabeth. Hogan took Elizabeth back to get medical
attention, leaving Savage for dead. Savage would later attack Hogan in
the first aid room, bashing him with the WWF Title belt and setting the
stage for Wrestlemania V, where the Mega Powers Explode! Hogan went on
to win the WWF Title at Wrestlemania and it wasn't long before Elizabeth
was solidly in Hogan's corner as he feuded with Savage.
Randy Savage brought in a new manager to combat Elizabeth: the Sensational
Sherri Martel! The Macho Man and Sensational Sherri would also get the
services of the Human Wrecking Machine Zeus, who had originally appeared
in the movie No Holds Barred as Hulk Hogan's enemy. Savage and Zeus would
be defeated by Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake at the 1989 Summer Slam as
the Hogan-Savage feud continued to rage on. In the fall of 1989, Savage
became the KING of the World Wrestling Federation, defeating Hacksaw Jim
Duggan on Superstars of Wrestling, allowing himself to become Macho King
and Sherri to become the Sensational Queen Sherri. The gimmick was perfect
for them, and they remained the top heel draw for the WWF despite not competing
for the WWF Title. The two would feud with Duggan and then the American
Dream Dusty Rhodes, who brought in Sweet Sapphire as his manager to combat
Sherri. The four would set the standard for mixed gender feuds and wrestled
the first Mixed Tag Team matches in WWF history. Brother Love soon became
a part of the feud, joining Sherri to berate Sapphire on an edition of
the Brother Love Show at the 1990 Royal Rumble. Dusty Rhodes would go on
to eliminate Savage later on in the Royal Rumble match, leading in to Wrestlemania.
Dusty Rhodes and Sweet Sapphire brought a secret weapon to Wrestlemania
VI, none other than Miss Elizabeth as their manager as they defeated the
Macho King and Sensational Queen in the first televised Mixed Tag Team
match in WWF history. The two teams would have rematches, and single bouts,
throughout the summer leading in to Summer Slam where Savage defeated Dusty
Rhodes and Sherri defeated Sapphire by forfeit when she "sold out" to Ted
DiBiase.
The royal couple went on to challenge the Ultimate Warrior for the WWF
World Heavyweight Title and the Warrior defeated Savage in several matches.
To get revenge, Savage and Sherri cost the Warrior his WWF Title at the
1991 Royal Rumble when the Warrior was defeated by Iraqi sympathizer, Sgt.
Slaughter. The stage was set for the Wrestlemania VII Retirement Match
between Savage and the Warrior which was won by the Warrior. Sherri was
furious with Savage and screamed at him, even going so far as to strike
him, after the match. In one of the most emotional moments in WWF history,
Miss Elizabeth jumped out of the crowd, ran to the ring, threw Sherri off
of Savage and went on to reunite with Savage in a moment that had the capacity
crowd in tears of joy. Savage kept wrestling, despite losing the retirement
match. He defeated Rick Martel on the WWF International tour after Wrestlemania
and wrestled under a mask as "Mr. Madness", teasing a legitimate return
to the ring. While doing this, though, he served as a colour commentator
for WWF Superstars of Wrestling. During one such broadcast, Savage came
to the ring during an interview Mean Gene OKerlund was conducting with
Miss Elizabeth and asked her to marry him in yet another moment that had
the crowd in tears. With tears in her eyes, Elizabeth said "oooh yeeah"
and the Match Made in Heaven was set for Summer Slam 1991. The two were
married in the ring, but afterwards... things got nasty as Elizabeth opened
up a present to find a King Cobra just seconds before Jake Roberts and
the Undertaker crashed the wedding, attacking Savage and terrorizing Elizabeth.
Savage and Roberts would engage in a very nasty feud as the WWF fans demanded
Savage be reinstated. On WWF Superstars, Savage was tied up in the ropes
by Roberts who produced the same King Cobra, which bit Savage on the arm
in a moment that felt too real to be scripted. Tunney agreed to let Savage
wrestle at the 1991 Survivor Series, teaming with Sid and the Legion of
Doom against Roberts, IRS and the Natural Disasters but the snake incident
was used to explain Savage not appearing. He would be replaced by Sid,
but Sid also got injured leaving the match 3 on 3. The WWF produced a special
pay per view called "This Tuesday in Texas" within a week of the Survivor
Series where Savage defeated Roberts. After the match, though, Roberts
struck Elizabeth in the face to knock her down in a heinous act that only
intensified the feud. Savage defeated Roberts on Saturday Night's Main
Event just after the Royal Rumble in 1992, breaking his nose and effectively
ending the feud.
Savage was then named the #1 contender to Ric Flair's WWF Title for Wrestlemania
VIII as Hogan was heading into retirement. Ric Flair began claiming that
he had been the original love in Elizabeth's life, releasing doctored photographs
of himself with Elizabeth. Savage, motivated by jealousy, defeated Ric
Flair in a classic blood bath at Wrestlemania VIII to win his second WWF
World Heavyweight Title in the Indianapolis Hoosierdome in 1992. In real
life, Savage and Elizabeth weren't doing well and it wasn't long before
Savage announced his divorce in WWF Magazine. Savage defended the WWF Title
against the Ultimate Warrior at Summer Slam 1992 in a match where Mr. Perfect,
Flair's manager of sorts, vowed to be in the corner of one of the participants.
Flair and Perfect staged everything, though, and ended up attacking both
men throughout the match. The Warrior and Savage put their differences
aside and hugged after the match, setting up a tag team feud between them
and the team of Ric Flair and newcomer Razor Ramon. Ramon actually cost
Savage the WWF Title in the fall of 1992 when Ric Flair defeated Savage
for his second WWF title. The feud was set to climax at the 1992 Survivor
Series in a tag team bout, but the Warrior left the WWF, leaving Savage
to take... surprisingly... Mr. Perfect as his new tag team partner. Together,
they defeated Flair and Ramon in a classic bout. He became a full time
commentator for WWF Monday Night Raw alongside Vince McMahon and Bobby
Heenan, wrestling sporadically. Savage returned to the ring when Crush
attacked him on Monday Night RAW, alleging that Savage could have saved
him from an attack by the WWF Champion Yokozuna. The feud would climax
at Wrestlemania X in Madison Square Garden when Savage beat Crush in a
Falls Count Anywhere Match. Savage would do colour commentary until he
left the WWF in the fall of 1994.
The Macho Man popped up in WCW in the fall of 1994, vowing to pick a side
in the feud between Hulk Hogan and the Three Faces of Fear combination
of Kevin Sullivan, Brutus Beefcake and Avalanche. Savage shocked the world
in choosing Hogan, and the two defeated Sullivan and Beefcake at the Clash
of the Champions in early 1995. It wasn't long before Ric Flair began managing
Vader against Hogan, and the Mega Powers demanded Flair return to the ring.
Ric Flair made a big comeback in a vicious feud with Savage. Savage and
Flair were both eliminated from the WCW United States Title Tournament
in 1995 when they brawled throughout the arena. Savage defeated Ric Flair
at Bash at the Beach and Ric Flair went on to turn face in an unrelated
storyline. Savage became the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion in November
of 1995, winning the three ring World War 3 Battle Royal over 59 other
competitors when Hulk Hogan pulled the Giant underneath the bottom rope,
allowing the referee to think Savage had won. Savage lost the belt to Flair
at the 1995 Starrcade pay per view, before regaining it again on Nitro.
In January of 1996, Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan brought in a secret weapon...
MISS ELIZABETH! Despite the fact that Randy and Elizabeth divorced, they
remained great friends. Randy Savage went on to defend the WCW World Title
against Flair at WCW Superbrawl in February of 1996 in a Steel Cage Match
and, in something virtually nobody saw coming, Elizabeth turned against
Savage to help Flair win the Title! Ric Flair and Elizabeth made great
use of the divorce in the storyline, claiming that he and Elizabeth were
really enjoying the money she got in the divorce settlement. Flair and
Savage kept on feuding until the NWO era of WCW began.
Randy Savage teamed with
Lex Luger and Sting to cahllenge Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and a third man
who was to be named. Many superstars were put forward including Shawn Michaels,
Jeff Jarrett, the 123 Kid, Ted DiBiase, a member of the WCW team or even
Vince McMahon. In a huge surprise, the third man turned out to be Hulk
Hogan, who turned heel and quickly captured the WCW World Title. Savage
would be Hogan's first major challenge at Halloween Havoc 1996, but Hogan
won the match and took Elizabeth as a member of the New World Order to
boot. At Fall Brawl 1996, Savage was set to team up with Lex Luger, Arn
Anderson and Sting against Hogan, Hall, Nash and a fourth man but on Nitro,
an NWO version of Sting joined with Hogan and company. The real Sting was
offended that the WCW team thought he would defect to the NWO and no showed
Fall Brawl, except for a few moments where he cleaned house to prove a
point. In any case, Savage was one who was especially brutalized. The love
story bubbled up, though, as Elizabeth ran into the ring to shield Savage
from the onslaught of the NWO, leading to Hogan spray painting her with
the NWO letters even though she was still an NWO member.
If you can't beat em, join em! Savage joined the NWO to help Hogan defeat
Roddy Piper at Superbrawl VII in one of those hard to explain, WCW booking
decisions. In doing so, he reunited with Miss Elizabeth as a heel combination
feuding with Diamond Dallas Page and his wife Kimberly. With Sting as the
new WCW World Champion, Randy Savage got his shot at Spring Stampede 1998
and won the title, opening him up to more attacks from Hogan. Unfortunately,
Savage tore his ACL during the title victory and Hogan was able to defeat
him the next night with help from WCW newcomer Bret Hart. When Savage returned,
he joined with Kevin Nash and others to form the Wolf Pac, in contrast
to Hogan's NWO Hollywood. Savage had to take time off, though, to rest
his knee and was gone for almost a year.
When Savage returned, he
came with a new look and replaced Elizabeth with his real-life girlfriend,
Gorgeous George who was only 22 years of age. He became obsessed with Diamond
Dallas Page, refereeing the match where Page won the Title at Spring Stampede
1999 and helping Page keep the title in subsequent rematches. Savage finally
went after the WCW World Title after Kevin Nash took the gold at Slamboree
1999. Around this time, Savage added Madusa and Miss Madness to his ringside
set of ladies and the group was known as Team Madness.
Randy Savage brought in Sid Vicious at the Great American Bash in 1999
to attack Kevin Nash, leading to a tag team bout with Savage and Sid against
Sting and Kevin Nash at Bash at the Beach with the stipulation that whoever
pinned Nash would become WCW World Champion. Savage was able to pin Nash
and regain the gold for the fourth time in WCW, but lost it one night later
to Hollywood Hogan when Nash powerbombed Savage to reform the New World
Order. Once Madusa and Miss Madness began feuding with each other, Savage
fired both of them and began feuding with NBA star Dennis Rodman, who he
defeated at Road Wild 1999. Savage would join the Millionaire's Club, a
group consisting of various legends like Flair, Page, Hogan, and others.
When Vince Russo took charge of WCW, though, Savage quit the company along
with Gorgeous George.
Savage stayed busy in his retirement from wrestling, appearing in Spiderman
alongside Kirsten Dunst and Toby McGuire as wrestler Bonesaw McGraw, a
wrestler who Spiderman wrestled to attempt to earn money for a car. Savage
then went on to release a rap album which was extremely critical of his
former friend Hulk Hogan, and was criticized heavily as being subpar. Savage
returned to the ring in November of 2004 after a near 4 year hiatus for
NWA-TNA at Victory Road. Reports say that Hogan, who was backstage, had
a near altercation at the event. Savage quit TNA citing unsafe working
conditions, but was things were smoothed over and Savage returned to confront
Jeff Jarrett, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall on TNA Impact in November of 2004.
This set up a six man tag with Jarrett, Nash and Hall taking on Savage,
Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles at Turning Point in December of 2004 and it was
expected that Savage would become the TNA Champion over Jeff Jarrett at
the December supercard. Apparently, the plans changed and Savage, upset
with this, quit TNA for the second time. He began working for Harley Race,
appearing in WLW shows, but was injured after a training accident which
appears to be a career ending injury.
What a career, though!
The Macho Man has held six World Heavyweight Titles, had classic feuds
with Lawler, Hogan, Flair, and a host of others, headlined the WWF during
its boom in the 1980s AND the WCW during its boom in the mid to late 1990s,
and broke the mold. Savage was a rare breed in his day, mixing high athleticism,
aerial attacks and brawling to break the mold of what a WWF Champion should
be. Savage inspired an entire era of young fans including Chris Jericho,
Edge and Christian Cage through his Wrestlemania III classic with Rick
Steamboat and his influence can be seen all around the business. Without
question, the Macho Man belongs here in the UWOW Hall of Fame. |
