"Rowdy" Roddy Piper
Hall of Fame, Class of 2005
*
Rowdy Roddy Piper was billed as hailing for Scotland but he actually grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada. He lead a rather rough life and ran away from home at the age of 12 and began wrestling at the age of 15. He had his first match against Larry "The Axe" Hennig in the early 1970s, losing in only ten seconds. He stayed in Canada, mostly, wrestling as a jobber to the stars before getting his big break in 1975 in Los Angeles, California as the Masked Canadian. He won his first title, defeating Chavo Guerrero Sr. for the NWA Americas Title and then began teaming with a young Adrian Adonis to feud with the Guerreros and Tom Jones in the tag team division.

He won his first major singles title, defeating Lonnie Mayne to win the NWA United States Championship before joining with John Studd and Killer Brooks to win various tag team titles. In February of 1979, he tamed with Ed Wiskowski to capture the NWA World Tag Team Championship and then moved on to Portland Oregon to team with Rick Martel. He returned to Mid Atlantic as a major wrestling star, feuding with Ric Flair, Paul Jones, Ricky Steamboat and the Briscos. In April of 1983, Piper defeated Greg Valentine to take the NWA United States Title and the two would engage in one of the bloodiest feuds in their careers, climaxing at the 1983 Starrcade where Piper beat Valentine in the classic Dog Collar Match.

Piper moved to the World Wrestling Federation in January of 1984 and became the company's top heel and began hosting the ground breaking "Piper's Pit" interview segments. He would go on to feud with the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, battling him in the War to Settle the Score in February of 1985, losing via disqualification. He would then team with Paul Orndorff in a losing effort in the first Wrestlemania main event against Hulk Hogan and TV star Mr. T. Piper and Mr. T would carry on the high profile feud that made headlines in Hollywood and wrestling alike, culminating in a boxing match as part of Wrestlemania II. Piper began feuding with Hillbilly Jim, Uncle Elmer and Cousin Luke, as well, and formed a successful team with Cowboy Bob Orton.

Despite his monster heel status, the fans began cheering for Piper and the WWF gave the fans what they wanted. Piper broke up with Bob Orton and began feuding with Adrian Adonis. He would wrestle three major Saturday Night's Main Event bouts in 1986 and 1987, defeating former WWF Champion Iron Sheik, former partner Bob Orton and then losing to Adrian Adonis via count out. Piper made the announcement that he was going to retire from wrestling so that he could persue an acting career and accepted a Hair versus Hair match with Adrian Adonis for Wrestlemania III. Piper won that match, of course, and set Brutus Beefcake on a brand new gimmick in the process.

Piper wasn't overly successful in Hollywood, but did appear in the 1988 film "They Live" and various others including Hell Comes to Frogtown, Buy & Cell, and an edition of the Love Boat TV series. He made his return to the WWF at Wrestlemania V to host a special edition of Piper's Pit featuring Brother Love and Jerry Springer's predecessor, Morton Downey Jr. Piper would appear sporadically throughout the spring and summer of 1989 and finally made his comeback complete, helping the Ultimate Warrior defeat Rick Rude at Summer Slam.

Rude and Piper waged war, leading to some classic bouts including a Steel Cage match in Madison Square Garden. Piper began feuding with Bad News Brown after they eliminated each other in the 1990 Royal Rumble match and settled the score in Toronto at Wrestlemania VI, where Piper painted half his body black, thus drawing much controversy and attention. Piper withdrew from the mat wars to focus on a career in colour commentary, joining Gorilla Monsoon to host various WWF pay per views. He began an angle where he befriended the hated Million Dollar Man's bodyguard Virgil and eventually helped Virgil turn on DiBIase. Piper served as a mentor to Virgil, accompanying him to the ring at Wrestlemania VII. In January of 1992, Piper won his very first belt in the WWF, defeating the Mountie for the Intercontinental Championship. He would go on to lose that title to Bret Hart at Wrestlemania VIII before leaving the WWF once again. He returned for special occasions, playing the bagpipes with the Balmoral Highlanders at the 1992 Summer Slam and then as a referee for the WWF Title Match between Bret Hart and Yokozuna at Wrestlemania X. Piper was drawn back to the ring for a brief feud with Jerry Lawler before leaving again. In early 1996, Piper was named the Interim WWF President when Gorilla Monsoon was injured at the hands of Vader, and signed the famous Iron Man Match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. He also began feuding with Goldust, leading to their Hollywood Backlot Brawl at Wrestlemania XII. Piper once again left the WWF after Wrestlemania.

In October of 1996, Rowdy Roddy Piper shocked the world, showing up at WCW Halloween Havoc to confront the WCW World Champion Hollywood Hogan. The two renewed their rivalry from over ten years prior and headlined Starrcade, with Piper defeating Hogan for the first time with the sleeper. Piper and Hogan wrestled several rematches but Piper never won the title due to either a screwjob finish or a non-title stipulation. Piper began teaming with old rival Ric Flair against members of the NWO and, of course, the partnership dissolved and they too began feuding. Piper surprised the world by capturing the WCW United States Title in February of 1999, defeating Bret Hart and was also named WCW Commissioner. In the fall of 2000, Piper was fired by WCW after some altercations with Eric Bischoff related to Piper's strong dislike for the WCW product. He actually pitched a plan of action to fix WCW, but it was denied. Piper later released that video on his website to hype his return to wrestling in TNA.

Roddy Piper released his autobiography in 2002 and in 2003, showed up in TNA to berate Vince Russo over the death of Owen Hart and the demise of WCW, among other things, even though Russo wasn't working for TNA. Piper showed up in the WWE as part of the Wrestlemania XIX street fight between Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan and attacked Hogan with a steel pipe. Piper began hosting Piper's Pit and took Sean O'Haire in a role similar to the one Bob Orton played in the glory days. Piper began feuding with Rikishi after smashing Snuka with another coconut in April of 2003. When Hulk Hogan went under a mask as Mr. America, Piper also began feuding with him and it would seem that the plan was to have Piper and Hogan wrestle as part of the 20th anniversary of Wrestlemania in Madison Square Garden. Hogan quit the WWF, though, and Piper was fired after making public statements about his past drug use, this angering Vince McMahon because of the WWE's reputation at the time.

He returned to TNA and began public rants against Vince Russo and Hulk Hogan, vowing to make sure Hogan never won the NWA Title. He never ended up wrestling, though, for TNA and only wrestled independent reunion shows. Despite his rocky relationship with Vince McMahon, Piper was announced as a member of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2005 in April of 2005. He then went on to host Piper's Pit at Wrestlemania with Steve Austin as a special guest. He would make various appearances for the WWE, including reigniting his feud with Bob Orton and son Randy on Smackdown. Batista and Eddie Guerrero teamed with piper to defeat the Ortons and Ken Kennedy on Smackdown in late 2005. He returned to team with the Highlanders to defeat the Spirit Squad in September of 2006. Piper began appearing as part of a WWE legends troup including Ted DiBiase, IRS, Sgt. Slaughter and Ric Flair in late 2006 and was voted in as Ric Flair's tag team partner for WWE Cyber Sunday against the tag championship Spirit Squad. To the shock of everyone, the legends won the tag team titles! They were set to take part in Survivor Series when Piper suffered a back injury on the WWE's tour of England. When he got himself checked out, Piper was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. He underwent treatment quickly and the prognosis is good, though Piper is vowing to not only beat cancer, but to show up on RAW and resume his wrestling career as he approached his 60th birthday.

His mouth, his actions, and his over the top persona have made Rowdy Roddy Piper one of the most recognizable names in the history of sports entertainment. His interview style remains unmatched! He set the standard for the wrestling interview segment, spawning the iconic Brother Love Show, the Funeral Parlour, the Peep Show and various others. There is no doubt this maniac of the ring belongs here among his peers in the UWOW Hall of Fame!
