"Stone Cold" Steve Austin
Hall of Fame, Inaugural Member
*
Stone Cold Steve Austin was born Steve Williams in Austin Texas and became a standout football player at North Texas State. He began training for wrestling in the late 1980s under Chris Adams and Skandor Akbar and found his way into the USWA. He initially debuted under his real name but, realizing that Dr. Death Steve Williams was an international star, he took the name Steve Austin after his home town. He teamed and then feuded with Chris Adams over Adams' real-life x-wife Jeanie Clarke, who Austin would later marry in real life, with Adams' new wife Toni Adams also getting involved. He also advanced to the finals of the USWA Southern Heavyweight TItle Tournament but lost to Jeff Jarrett in 1991.

Austin jumped to the WCW in 1991 as "Stunning" Steve Austin, managed by Lady Blossom. Austin beat Bobby Eaton to win his first WCW TV Title in June of 1991 and then joined Paul E. Dangerously's Dangerous Alliance. He lost the TV Title to Barry Windham in 1992 but regained it back one month later in May. He held the title until September of 1992 when he lost it to Ricky Steamboat. When the Dangerous Alliance broke up, Austin teamed up with Brian Pillman as the Hollywood Blondes and became one of the all time great tag teams in wrestling. They won the WCW World Tag Team Titles by defeating Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas in March of 1993 and held on to the titles in a Clash of Champions main event against Ric Flair and Arn Anderson later that year. When Brian Pillman was injured, Austin teamed with Lord Steven Regal to drop the titles to the Horsemen team of Arn Anderson and Paul Roma.

With Pillman hurt, Austin joined Colonel Robert Parker's Studd Stable. When Pillman returned, he and Austin teamed briefly before Parker caused their break up and eventual feud. Austin would defeat Dustin Rhodes to win the WCW United States Title at Starrcade 1993 and held on to it until August of 1994 when he lost it to Ricky Steamboat. Austin regained the title via forfeit when Steamboat was unable to compete due to his career ending back injury, but lost it that same night to Hacksaw Jim Duggan in 29 seconds. Austin lost in two attempts to regain the gold and was out of WCW when Eric Bischoff fired him, claiming that he wasn't marketable, after Austin missed television tapings due to injuries.

Paul Heyman, then in charge of ECW, called Austin and gave him a job in ECW in 1995. Austin took the name "Superstar" Steve Austin and feuded with ECW stars the Sandman and Mikey Whipwreck, forging his hardcore gimmick where he would talk trash and shout profanity while mocking Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and other WCW superstars.

He was hired by the WWF in 1995 and took the name "The Ringmaster" and was managed by Ted DiBiase who declared him the new Million Dollar Champion. Austin competed in the 1996 Royal Rumble, impressing many fans with his classic style. He defeated Savio Vega in his first Wrestlemania at Wrestlemania XII. Austin hated the "Ringmaster" name and looked to change it. The writers and Austin couldn't come up with anything until Austin's wife, Jeannie, told him to drink his tea before it became "stone cold". Austin latched on to the name, shaved his head and the rest is history. He took on Savio Vega at In Your House: Beware of Dog, losing the match and his manager Ted DiBiase according to a stipulation. Austin gloated that he was glad to be rid of DiBiase and the Million Dollar belt stopped appearing on WWF television.

Austin's career took off when he won the 1996 King of the Ring tournament, defeating Jake "The Snake" Roberts in the finals. When all was said and done, Austin coined the catch-phrase Austin 3:16 accidentally by mocking Jake Roberts' religious gimmick, saying "You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere! Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16 ... Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!". Austin didn't instantly raise up in the card. He defeated Yokozuna at the Free for All for SUmmer Slam 1996 and returned to pay per view in October to defeat Hunter Hearst Helmsley. He began to taunt Bret Hart, demanding that Hart come out of retirement to face him. Austin would further develop the Stone Cold gimmick, breaking Brian Pillman's ankle during an interview on WWF Raw. Bret Hart finally agreed to face Austin and he defeated him 1, 2, 3. Shortly after, Steve Austin and Brian Pillman staged the infamous "break in" vignette where Austin broke into Brian Pillman's house on a live edition of RAW and Pillman pulled a gun on him. Steve Austin won the 1997 Royal Rumble in Texas, even though he had been eliminated by Bret Hart just moments before. The referees did not see the elimination as they were trying to break up a brawl between Mankind and special guest participant Terry Funk. When Shawn Michaels forfeited the WWF Title, a special Final Four match was signed for In Your House in February where Bret Hart defeated Steve Austin, Vader and the Undertaker to win his 4th WWF Title. One night later, Austin helped Sid beat Bret to take the title on RAW by hitting Bret with a steel chair. Austin and Bret would carry their feud into Wrestlemania XIII in a submission match refereed by Ken Shamrock. In a match that saw a rare double-turn, Austin entered a heel and went out a fan favourite and Bret Hart turned heel, winning the match when Steve Austin passed out in the sharpshooter. Austin was the antithesis to the usual WWF hero but he became the most popular WWF superstar of all time. Austin would injure Bret Hart during a match, putting him on the shelf, and come up short in a WWF Title Match against the Undertaker at In Your House: Cold Day In Hell.

When Bret Hart formed the Hart Foundation with Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart, Brian Pillman and the British Bulldog, Austin took Shawn Michaels as his partner to defeat Owen and the Bulldog for the WWF Tag Team Titles on RAW in May of 1997. The two were uneasy partners and they would have a very wild bout at King of the Ring 1997, against each other, despite their holding the Tag Team Titles. The two forfeited the titles when Michaels, again, left the WWF. Steve Austin would headline In Your House: Calgary Stampede, teaming with the Legion of Doom, Ken Shamrock and Goldust in a losing effort to the Hart Foundation in their home town of Calgary. Shortly after, Dude Love teamed with Steve Austin to capture the WWF Tag Team Championship from Owen Hart and the British Bulldog on a July edition of RAW.

Austin would go on to defeat Owen Hart at Summer Slam 1997 to become the new Intercontinental Champion, however, during the bout Owen Hart botched a tombstone piledriver and gave Austin a stunner that put him on the shelf and threatened to end his career. Austin forfeited both the World Tag Team Championship and the Intercontinental Title. Austin returned to attack Owen Hart at Ground Zero in September of 1997 and then stunned Vince McMahon on an edition of RAW, leading to Austin getting a chance to return to action with a "release form" that Vince McMahon said was necessary for him to compete. Steve Austin defeated Owen Hart to win his second Intercontinental Title on the undercard of the Michaels-Hart Montreal Screwjob, Survivor Series 1997 pay per view. Austin, though, was not interested in the title and dropped it to the Rock one month later via forfeit, before beating him down.

Austin set his sights on the WWF World Title, won the 1998 Royal Rumble and moved to challenge Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania XIV in a match that featured Mike Tyson as the special Enforcer. In one of the biggest WWF pay per views of the 1990s, Austin defeated Shawn Michaels with the Stunner and afterwards celebrated with Mike Tyson. The Attitude Era was born in one huge night that also saw Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie defeat the NEw Age Outlaws for the WWF Tag Team Titles and Owen Hart battle Triple-H in a war for the European Title. One night later, Vince McMahon and Steve Austin had their first formal, in-ring confrontation when McMahon told Austin that he didn't approve of the way he did things and let him know that they could do things the "easy way or the hard way". Austin stunned McMahon into oblivion and celebrated with a roaring audience.

The feud roared on to Over the Edge where the recently turned Dude Love challenged Steve Austin for the WWF World title with Vince McMahon as the special guest referee. Austin held on to the title, defying all odds, even with Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson running interferance. McMahon would sign Austin to face Kane in a First Blood Match inside Hell in the Cell, a match perceived to be unfair since Kane wore a mask. Kane would win the match and the title with major interferance from Vince McMahon and his Stooges. Austin went on to regain the title the very next night on RAW and defeated the Undertaker at Summer Slam 1998. Austin would lose his second title in a Triple THreat match against the Undertaker and Kane at Breakdown when the two brothers pinned Austin simultaneously. McMahon declared the title vacant, setting the stage for the Survivor Series 1998 tournament.

Vince McMahon fired Steve Austin in the storylines, but Austin got his revenge by kidnapping McMahon, holding a gun to his head on RAW. In a truly hilarious moment, Austin had McMahon on his knees in the ring and, in fear, McMahon wet his pants as Austin shot off the gun, which turned out to be a toy containing a scroll reading "BANG! 3:16". Shane McMahon began appearing on WWF programming and resigned Austin against Vince's wishes. Vince would demote Shane, making him a "lowly referee" and assigned him the Austin-Mankind semi final match at the 1998 Survivor Series in the World Title Tournament. There, Shane double-crossed Austin, helping Mankind win and setting the stage for another double-cross of Mankind in favour of the Rock, who would become Vince and SHane's Corporate Champion. Austin would defeat the Undertaker in a Buried Alive Match at Rock Bottom in December of 1998 before entering the 1999 Royal Rumble.

Austin entered at #1 and Vince McMahon at #2 in the 1999 Royal Rumble and McMahon would shockingly win the match with major help from the Corporation and after spending most of the match bacsktage. The next month at the St. Valentines Day Massacre on February 14th, Steve Austin battled Vince McMahon in a Steel Cage Match for a chance to face the Rock at Wrestlemania XV. Austin won despite interferance from the debuting Big Show Paul Wight, who threw Austin into the cage wall, breaking it down and allowing Austin to fall to the floor.

Stone Cold defeated the Rock 1, 2, 3 after the Stone Cold Stunner at Wrestlemania XV to become a three time WWF World Champion and won the rematch at Backlash. Austin would eventually lose the title to the Undertaker at Over the Edge 1999 with help from Shane McMahon, but Austin regained it a few weeks later for his fourth title. Linda McMahon named Steve Austin the CEO of the WWF, leading to a King of the Ring handicap ladder match for the CEO title where Vince and Shane defeated Austin to regain control. Austin held the gold until Summer Slam when he lost the title to Mankind in a triple threat match where Mankind pinned Triple-H. Steve Austin needed neck surgery, and a lengthy rehabilitation period, and a storyline began at the 1999 Survivor Series where Austin was run down by a car.

Stone Cold began appeared on Nash Bridges, an hour long crime drama starring Don Johnson and Cheech Marin, as the gritty detective Jake Cage. Talks began that Austin could easily star in his own television show and the buzz began that Austin would soon find his way into Hollywood.

Steve Austin stayed off of WWF programming but returned at Backlash 2000 to attack Vince McMahon and Triple-H, assisting the Rock in winning the WWF Title. Austin returned full-time and sought out to figure out who had run him down at Survivor SEries towards the end of 2000. At Unforgiven, it was revealed that Rikishi had been responsible for the attack in a wayward attempt to help his cousin, the Rock, get a chance to be World Champion again. Austin destroyed Rikishi at No Mercy but learned that it was actually Triple-H, who had become a fan favourite, that was responsible for paying Rikishi to run down Stone Cold. Austin defeated Triple-H at Survivor Series 2000 when he took a crane and lifted a car containing Triple-H way up and dropped it some 30 feet. Steve Austin went on to win the 2001 Royal Rumble to earn a title shot at Wrestlemania. Triple-H would defeat Steve Austin in a Three Stages of Hell match at No Way Out, leading to his title shot against the Rock at Wrestlemania.

Stone Cold Steve Austin surprised everyone by turning heel, taking the help of Vince McMahon to defeat the Rock after several vicious chair shots to become the five time WWF Champion at Wrestlemania XVII. One night later, on RAW, Triple-H and Steve Austin formed the "Two Man Power Trip" with Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon behind them. Together, they brutalized the Rock and became one of the hottest heel combinations in WWF history. Triple-H won the Intercontinental Title and together they beat the Undertaker and Kane to become the WWF Tag Team Champions. The storyline didn't last long, however, as an injury put Triple-H out of action and the pair lost the WWF Tag Team Titles to Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho on RAW.

The WWF had recently purchased World Championship Wrestling from Ted Turner's conglomerate and this allowed the WWF to take their storylines in a new direction. Debra started appearing regularly with Steve Austin in backstage vignettes and Austin began pairing with Kurt Angle to feud with Jericho and Benoit. WCW insurgents began to overrun the WWF and it was WCW Champion Booker T who helped Austin defeat Angle and Benoit in a Triple Threat match to retain his title. Austin began to integrate more comedy into his character as the WWF moved towards InVasion, on pay per view. At InVasion, Austin turned heel again by double crossing Kurt Angle and the WWF to join the Alliance, lead by Paul Heyman and the McMahon children. Austin dropped the WWF Title to Kurt Angle but regained it quickly. The InVasion angle came to a head at the 2001 Survivor Series as the InVasion team of WWF Champion Steve Austin, a newly defected Kurt Angle, Rob VanDam, Booker T and Shane McMahon were defeated by the Undertaker, Kane, Chris Jericho, the Big Show and the reigning WCW CHampion the Rock, when Kurt Angle rejoined the WWF, giving VInce McMahon 100% ownership of the WWF, or so he thought. One night later, Ric Flair returned to the WWF to reveal that Shane and Stephanie had sold him their 50% of the WWF and he was now McMahon's partner! All the Alliance members were fired except for the champions, such as Steve Austin who was still WWF Champion.

Austin, Flair and others battled Vince McMahon, Kurt Angle and others leading into December's pay per view, Vengeance, where Austin lost the WWF title to Chris Jericho, who went on to unify the WCW and WWF Titles later that night as the WWF Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship. Austin came up short in a RAW match against Jericho in the Steel Cage, failing to win the Undisputed World Title. Booker T also won a match over Austin and a losing streak began to take form. Austin entered the 2002 Royal Rumble but was eliminated by Kurt Angle. At WWF No Way Out, the New World Order helped Chris Jericho defeat Austin in the main event and spray-painted the NWO logo on his back, setting up a dream feud between NWO members and Stone Cold Steve Austin. This lead into the biggest Wrestlemania in recent history in the Skydome, in Toronto Ontario Canada. Stone Cold Steve Austin would defeat Scott Hall, but, angered that he had been wrestling mid-cards, he walked out of the WWF. Austin returned two weeks later on April 1st as the WWF Brand Extension was taking shape. Austin was to decide which show he would sign with and he chose Flair's RAW program.

Steve Austin defeated Scott Hall on RAW to win a WWF Title shot, but lost his shot in a match against Smackdown's Undertaker at Backlash when NWO members intefered. Steve Austin and the Big Show feuded witht he NWO but the Big Show turned on Austin to join the NWO on RAW, leading to a Six Man Tag as Austin, Bradshaw and Flair met Big Show, Scott Hall and X-Pac on a May 6th edition of RAW. Flair shocked the world by turning heel and joining the NWO members, if not the NWO itself. The NWO began to be phased out and Flair joined with the Big Show and Eddie Guerrero to feud with Steve Austin. Austin left RAW again, angered with the way his character was playing out. He returned to defeat Ric Flair on the June 3rd edition of RAW in a match where Flair would become his personal assistant. One week later, before RAW went on the air, Austin quit the WWF and left with his wife Debra, apparently upset that the renamed WWE asked him to do a job for Brock Lesnar. The WWF suspended Austin indefinitely, but kept him under contract to prevent him from appearing elsewhere. Austin and the WWF entered into a public pissing contest and, in July, Debra filed for divorce from Steve Austin after a domestic violence situation. By November, Austin began talking about making a comeback to WWE.

Stone Cold Steve Austin made his return to the WWF at No Way OUt 2002 to meet Eric Bischoff in a grudge match, stemming from their personal problems in WCW, bringing real life drama into the ring. On a subsequent edition of RAW, the Rock came out and challenged Austin for Wrestlemania, claiming they are 1:1 and there needs to be a tie breaker. Bischoff signs the match and at Wrestlemania XIX, the Rock pinned Steve Austin after three Rock Bottoms. Prior to the match, Austin had been hospitalized with panic attacks and there was concern he was at death's door. Austin's appearance at Wrestlemania was very much in doubt, but Austin was able to get to the arena and do the final job to the Rock in what Austin told Jim Ross was his last. Austin was "fired" by Eric Bischoff for hiding his health problems the next night on RAW. Of course, it wouldn't end there as Linda McMahon showed up at RAW to name Stone Cold Steve Austin as the co-General Manager of RAW alongside Eric Bischoff. Austin quickly reinstated the Intercontinental Title, rehired Jim Ross and held a beer bash with Bill Goldberg on May 5th. In a comedy "match", Steve Austin defeated Eric Bischoff in what was called a "Redneck Triathalon", involving burping, pie eating and pig pen fun. On July 7th, on RAW, Kane attacked Austin leading to a more bitter war with Bischoff. The feud came to a head at the 2003 Survivor Series as Team Bischoff battled Team Austin to determine who would be the full General Manager of RAW. Austin's team of Booker T, Rob VanDam, the Dudleys and Shawn Michaels were defeated by Bischoff's team of Chris Jericho, Scott Steiner, Christian, Mark Henry and Randy Orton.

Linda McMahon once again interfered to name Austin as the new Sherrif of RAW, driving a four wheeler around the ring. Austin involved himself in the Foley-Orton feud and encouraged Foley to return to the ring. He also beat up the two GEneral Managers of RAW and Smackdown, Bischoff and Paul Heyman at the Royal Rumble. He began to interfere in the Goldberg-Lesnar feud and gave Goldberg a ticket to Smackdown's No Way Out pay per view, where Goldberg went on to help Eddie Guerrero defeat Lesnar for the WWE World Title. Lesnar showed up on RAW to attack Austin during the historic match between Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff. Austin, Lesnar and Goldberg teased a three way match but ultimately it was Brock Lesnar versus Bill Goldberg at Wrestlemania XX with Austin as the guest referee. Austin then began to scale back from the WWE, appearing for special occasions including the SMackdown 5th anniversary, Wrestlemania XXI to be interviewed by Roddy Piper in the return of Piper's Pit, ECW One NIght Stand where he held a beer bash to honour ECW superstars, and at the WWE Homecoming where he stunned all four members of the McMahon Family. To get revenge, Linda McMahon even turned heel to kick Jim Ross in the nuts and fire him herself!

Austin and WWE would again have contract troubles as Austin agreed to wrestle a match against Jonathan Coachman where, if he won, Jim Ross would be rehired by Bischoff as the host of RAW after Ross had been fired... again. Austin walked out on the WWE when he learned taht he was scheduled to lose the match, keeping his friend Jim Ross off of WWE programming. The match was changed to feature WWE legends Goldust and Vader in a losing handicap effort to Batista. Vince McMahon went into the ring and announced that Austin had suffered an accident and lost the match by forfeit, meaning Ross was still fired.

Austin and McMahon reconciled behind the scenes, leading to Austin appearing on the revived Saturday Nights Main Event for a Beer Drinking Contest with JBL. Austin went on to induct Bret Hart into the WWE Hall of Fame the night before Wrestlemania XXII and teased a match with Hulk Hogan, who was also on stage, during the ceremony.

In the spring of 2006, it was announced that Steve Austin would star in his first feature film, "The Condemned" and production began in the summer of 2006.

Steve Austin is actually the highest earning WWF Champion of all time, surpassing Hulk Hogan in both title reigns and in revenue. His t-shirt with the words "Austin 3:16" across the front became a pop-culture phenomenan and many sports stars and celebrities were seen wearing them, as were young and old alike across North America. His wild persona inspired a new era of wrestling where the bad guys don't get booed and the good guys are nasty as they want to be. He defined an era and did so with amazing ring work. There is no doubt that Stone Cold Steve Austin belongs here in the UWOW Hall of Fame!
