What the critics are saying about the Controversial French Film Baise-Moi |
The French Film Baise-Moi--Co-directed by Virginie Despentes (who wrote the original novel) and Coralie Trinh -- just opened in the U.S. and it if its reception in France and Canada (where it has been banned from theatrical release) is any indication it will be the year's most controversial film. Sort of a violent, pornographic Thelma & Louise the film has drawn a lot of harsh criticism but it also has a few supporters. Here are some pro and con blurbs for the film. |

"With its graphic porno scenes, its brutal rape sequence and the bloodthirsty plot, it is unwatchable. At best, it makes you squirm as the most vile impulses of human nature are shown without any reservations or moral context. As feminist statements go, this one is so extreme it can only appeal to extremists." Bruce Kirkland, Toronto Sun |

"Baise-moi is an audacious and challenging film. Not just a provocation, it is a revolt - against puritanism, against the hypocrisy of public morality, against the prevailing order of tasteful aesthetics, against efforts to contain excess" Kay Armatage Toronto Film Festival Guide Book |

"How many films have been made about men running around shooting everyone? But when women do it, it suddenly becomes an outrage. Remember all the controversy over "Thelma and Louise"? Not to mention that, in addition to their guns, these women use their most powerful weapon of all, their bodies." Jeffrey M. Anderson, The San Francisco Examiner |

"John Waters used to make movies like this -- about nasty, asocial women who turn to anarchy when the world gives them a raw deal -- but he did it for laughs and didn't mix his satire with half-baked messages about corrective revenge and the power gap between men and women." Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronical |

"Since Manu and Nadine's first mutual victim is a woman and the climactic killing scene takes place at a sex club, Baise-moi shoots itself in the foot — and other, more intimate, places — by suggesting that the gun-wielding gals have a more conflicted attitude toward sex and their gender than has been heretofore presented" Rod Armstrong, Reel.com |
"Gleefully amoral, nihilistic and not all that smart, Baise-moi is still exhilarating. It's a collision of punk-rock aesthetics, feminist politics and vintage exploitation-movie sleaze." Jason Anderson,Eye Weekly |

""Baise Moi" is a lot like these porn flicks with "plots". Be that as it may, if you're looking for a completely insane road movie with lots of gratuitouts sex and violence and don't mind the trashy picture and sound quality, go see this. It's fun." nggalai.com |

"...on a moral level, I was disgusted by Baise-Moi. I found the sexual imagery gratuitous, the story stupid, the character development poor and the execution lacking in every sense." Katherine Monk, Vancouver Sun |
