Holding with previous years, the cost of the pool is $100. Payouts will be made to each weekly winner and the top players after bowl week. With 114 players last year, the winner received $3150 and payouts were made down to 10th place who received $175. Weekly winners received $110 for 1st, $60 for 2nd and $30 for 3rd. Due to my own time commitments, I decided to play for free a couple of years ago and that will continue. This should not cause concern for anyone as I have finished in the bottom ten two of the last four years.
To play the pool, I will send you 20 games each Monday to pick against the spread, which I will obtain from an online casino. The games are also available on the website if you do not receive the email. Your picks are due back to me by 4pm Central Time on Thursday each week. Picks are due on Thursday because some weeks' games will include the Thursday night ESPN game. Any games not on Saturday will be noted on the pick sheet. I will post my picks to the website prior to 4pm central time on Thursday. I will try to post the rest of the pool's picks before the Thursday game. If they are not posted Thursday night, they will definitely be posted before the Saturday games. Usually on Monday, I will send out the results of the preceeding weekend's games along with next week's games.
Some rules:
I reserve the right to post everyone's picks at 4pm on Thursday. If your picks are not in by 4pm Thursday they will not be included. Look at it this way - there are NO EXCEPTIONS to the 4pm Thursday deadline for submitting picks. (It takes too much time tracking down everyone's picks, so I am no longer going to do it. Set a reminder in your calendar for 3pm Central time if you have to, but I will not include anything received after 4pm.) If I post picks and yours are not included, that means I received them after 4pm Thursday or not at all. If this is the case, forward me your original email with the time stamp.
Those that do not submit picks by the deadline for the given week will receive the lesser performing of the underdogs or the favorites. Therefore, the best you can hope to do for that week is 10 wins out of 20.
Weekly pick submissions will also contain a tiebreaker in case of a weekly tie. The tiebreaker will be the total number of combined YARDS gained in the Game of the Week. The Game of the Week is determined by me and will be noted on the pick sheets. To determine the total combined yards, I go to ESPN.com, find the game of the week's box score, look at the line that says Total Yards and add the two teams' totals.
In case of a tie for one of the overall winners, tiebreakers are first determined by number of points earned throughout the year - THIS IS NEW THIS YEAR. You will get 3 points for a 1st place weekly payout, 2 points for a 2nd, 1 point for a 3rd. This was changed so that a player with two 2nds will win overall over a player with one 1st. If total points are tied, then performance in Bowl Week. If still tied, the money is combined and split.
I usually do a set of payments at the end of each month during the season (all of the weekly winners in September, will be paid around the end of September.)
