| A new term, and lots of exciting things planned - here's the low-down on what's happening in and around your friendly bar! Groovy, baby! St Matts has launched it's film night - every other Wednesday come down to the bar with your mates and chill out with a couple of bottles of wine and a few jugs of cocktails while getting yourself a bit of culture (if you could call Austin Powers culture!). Films coming up include Snatch - it's worth it just for Brad girls!, Charlie's Angels - one for the blokes - Cameron Diaz and co with all those impossible-in-heels moves! Plus Run Lola, Run. Any films you want to see, put in your requests to the SU office! Personally, I think a little bit of Mary Poppins would be good for the family spirit of St Matts - you just can't beat Dick Van Dyke! “You can’t stop us! We’re on a mission from God...” Mid term blues? Come and share them on 19the February at our innovative Blues Brothers night! Music to jive and get drunk to courtesy of the amazing Stunt Cat, so don those gangster hats and shades and skunk on down to the bar! Oompah Loompah night - scheduled for 5the March - is bound to be a colourful night, with people coming as their favourite celebrities oompah loompah style, and a selection of colourful cocktails to give you the courage to show your orange face to the rest of the bar! We've seen Michael Jackson black and white, now see him orange, or how about that Elvis quiff in green? Important stuff vital to the well being of St. Matts Just in case you haven't seen the posters plastered up all over the place, elections are coming! So, if you want to prove your greatness and make a difference to the student experience why not run? In addition to the full-time, paid, Sabbatical positions, there are also part-time positions available, such as women's officer, rag chair and environmental officer. For more details of positions and how to stand go to www.uwesu.net/elections. Not only will it look fabulous on your CV, but it really will give you, the student, the opportunity to stand up for the things that are important to you- even if tat is only the price of beer! Having a ball! And of course, the ball is on it's way! Yep, it's true, we really do have the wack-a-day master himself Timmy Mallet attending! Greeting guests and playing Mallet's mallet with, more than likely, sozzled students, it's an event not to be missed, so get those plasters on your chins and give them all a wave! In addition we have the fabulous Stunt Cat DJ-ing (if you haven't heard them, check them out at St Matts at the Blues Brothers night), also karioke with Sue and Ricky, and of course, no UWE event would be complete without Krazy Paul! It's a formal event, which means shopping for new dresses girls (any excuse)! And all those men in suits - what is it about a suit that makes the most unlikely of men completely irresistible? Tickets cost £25 each and include free bus travel both there and back running from St Matts and the centre, also a free welcome drink and buffet in addition to the fabulous entertainment listed above! | The Sports Desk with Chris Daymond It’s time for your latest installment of news from the sporting world people, and there’s a lot to get through. So let’s crack on. As usual I’ll start with the latest news from your very own St. Matts, of which you can be very proud. The Shadwell Sitch Shadwell Rovers currently find themselves two points clear at the top of the league after some good fighting performances, although the team below them have a game in hand. The season is drawing to an end so keep your fingers crossed that they can go on to win the title. Well done to Liam Roche, John and Ben Wells, who are all chasing for the top goalscorer’s award, and to keep goalkeeper Matty ’Goat’el who has kept a good deal of clean sheets this year (his football has also been quite good). Congratulations to manager Lee Cooper who has kept the team motivated through a tough season. Still poolin’ around That leads me nicely into activities on the sacred St. Matts pool tables. Two singles tournaments have seen the Rattlesnakes displaying their class with victories from Tom ‘The Rat’ Sharland and most recently from Lee ‘The Snake’ Cooper. In both the finals they beat opponents from the mighty Guinea Pigs but the league has seen the Guinea Pigs take a decisive lead after beating the Rattlesnakes 5-4. A special big-up to the Guinea Pig groupies (Becky, Gemma and Sarah). St Matts face their first challenge on the way to taking over the world of pool when they played Tewkesbury on Sunday 16th February. Unfortunately they lost the game 27-17 but put up a good fight against the more professional line-up. Tom Sharland won ‘man of the match’ after winning four out of five frames and Hayley Mason won ‘woman of the match’. Future games will see St. Matts proving that they are the greatest campus at UWE so bring it on Glenside and Frenchay! The B***** and H***** snooker championship Now let’s turn our attention away from St. Matts as I have sold my beloved campus for too long. The last ever Benson and Hedges snooker championship saw Mark Williams beating Stephen Hendry comprehensively in the final. The tournament always provides a good excuse for my housemates and myself to do no work for a good week or two so it had to get a mention. Cricket Politics If you haven’t noticed, the Cricket World Cup is going on at the moment and controversy has been in the air. After England refused to play in Zimbabwe they have found themselves in a very tricky predicament which could see them crashing out. Things are looking bad also for South Africa and I predict some upsets are on the cards. Six Nations Crazy England have also been in action with the Six Nations Rugby. A solid victory against the French has set them in good stead to finally get the Grand Slam although let’s hope they don’t slip up when playing Ireland at Lansdowne Road like they did in last year’s competition. I predict that England will reign victorious this time around. Against France they were boring at times and did not look like taking the world by storm but they did enough which was critical. Why do the Aussies have to be so good at everything? Matters were not quite so rosy for the England football team against Australia however. Although the game was only a friendly, everyone would have loved to see us get one over on the Aussies. It was not to be, as we dropped two goals in the first half. Sven Goran Eriksson then proceeded to make 11 substitutes in a “I don’t care, it’s only a friendly” philosophy. The England B team as they could also have been known managed to get back into the game with a goal through Francis Jeffers, but ended up losing 3-1. Oh yeah, and Cheltenham Town are still bottom! I’m still not getting any e-mails, people. I’m guessing that this is because this page is so full with information that there is no need for comment. However, ideas for future focus would be warmly welcomed. I was considering dedicating half the page to me and everything I’ve done in the next article. If you have any objections then let me know. If I hear nothing, I’ll assume that the proposal is a good one. crimsonchris@hotmail.com Back to February home page |
