The Velvet Crush Rock Concert Action Musik records released December 2000 |
Reviews |
A good live album should do two things: first, reveal an aspect of the band not found on their studio albums; and second, sound like it would when you saw the band in person. Sadly, most live albums fail to do this, so I must admit my expectations for Rock Concert were not all that high. So when I got my copy of Rock Concert, I popped it into my stereo and immediately cranked up the volume to compensate for any shortcomings in the sound quality. Then the Velvet Crush hit the opeing riff to "Window To The World" and it felt like somebody goosed me. The sound quality on Rock Concert is amazing. All of the instruments are clearly audible. It sounds as though you are actually in the club, beer in hand, watching the Velvet Crush play live. As for the actual performance of the songs themselves, the Crush plays it pretty close to the vest, as no song is treated much differently than on the studio albums. However, what the band does bring to the table is an increased level of energy. The playing is raw and loud, and when the Crush rips into "This Life Is Killing Me" you could break a sweat just sitting there listening to it. If you happened to see Matthew Sweet on his last couple of tours, you get a pretty good idea of what the VC sounds like live. So for those who never got a chance to see the Velvet Crush in concert (and unfortunately I have to count myself among them), thank your lucky stars for Rock Concert. It's the ultimate Velvet Crush tour souvenir. |
