Jewish Business Venture | ||||
JBV is a relatively new group. We have been working hard to create a niche for JBV. This year we focused on professional development sessions in addition to networking with other Jewish business-minded professionals. It has been difficult to find a student to take the reigns, but Aaron Goodman has asked to take a larger role. Aaron’s email is, adgoodman@wisc.edu. In terms of finding speakers, LisaCollins, at the Business Career Center, is the person with whom you should speak. You can remind her that I spoke with her this year. She spoke on creating resumes. She is great!! One of her colleagues was scheduled to give a discussion on networking. Unfortunately, the session was cancelled because it apparently was a little too close to Passover and no one could make it to the function.. (Something to learn from.) The name of the person lined up to speak was Joan Gilman, and would be happy to run the networking session in the fall. Here is the info. for each of them: Lisa Collins: 608-262-9040; email: lcollins@bus.wisc.edu Joan Gillman: 608-262-9982; email: jgillman@facstaff.wisc.edu In terms of generating successful events, I always emailed each of the students on the JBV list, filed at Hillel, a couple weeks before the event. Then I sent a reminder email the day before the event, and called everyone from the list the day of the event. The group is not too large yet, as the group is very new. It is pretty easy to contact the entire list in about half an hour. An idea that unfortunately did not work was that of starting a business through Hillel. For example, a bagel-order business or a challah-order business. Neither of these ideas worked. Right now, it is important to continue with the same genre of professional development sessions, because the core group of students we have right now are interested in these sort of session. Of course, it is important to speak to the students regarding the kind of subjects they want to see covered. To expand and find more business students, utilize the students that are already involved (i.e., those on the JBV list at Hillel). Encourage them to invite other students to JBV events. In addition, make sure that flyers regarding JBV functions are posted all over the business building (Grainger Hall). There are bulleting boards all over the building, including the library upstairs. Make sure and leave flyers by the payphones as well. It is also a great idea to speak with Lisa Collins (email above) regarding ways to advertise. A couple quick tips: Sean Blitz, although hasn’t expressed any interest in leading the group, is someone who would probably take on a larger role if asked, especially if Aaron is taking on a larger leadership role. Sean's email is, seblitz@wisc.edu. Abby Beyer is a great participant of the group and has come to everything, although has expressed a couple times that she is too busy to take on an official leadership role. She is happy to help with smaller tasks though. Abby's email is, abeyer@wisc.edu. Back to target group index. Back to main page. |
