Miscellaneous Information
What to do when you first get to campus:

Take a tour of the campus.  You would be surprised about how much you can learn on that tour.

Get settled into your apartment as soon as possible.  The sooner you become acclamaited at home, the better because once students start to return you will have much less time to take care of little things like hooking up a telephone.  You should also become acquainted with how and where you will accomplish your weekly tasks, such as grocery shopping and laundry.

Take advantage of the activities that require warm weather like eating on the terrace at Memorial Union.  The warm weather will not last long.  Do not worry though, there are many things to do when it is cold.

Talk to Chris, the Hillel office manager and have her review the administration guide she created.  She can help you understand how the office works, very quickly.

Having a life beyond the Fellowship:

Our staff here at Hillel is very close and we often go out as a group.  Utilize the knowledge of each staff member about the area.  They can each recommend restaurant, bars or other hot spots that may appeal to your unique interests.

A few of my favorite places are:

Ian's Pizza (pizza by the slice); 319 N. Frances; 608-257-0597

Lacey's Crepes (creperie); 505 State St.; 608-257-2733

Chins (Chinese food); 422 State St.; 608-661-0177

Noodles (food); 232 State St.; 608-257-6393

Paul's Club (bar); 212 State St.; 608-257-5250

Genna's (bar); 105 W. Main St.; 608-255-4770

The Great Dane (bar/restaurant); 123 E. Doty St.; 608-284-0000

Angelic Brew Co. (bar); 322 W. Johson St; 608-257-2707

One more great social outlet is the monthly grad-student event at a bar.  It is just one night a month in which all the Jewish grad students meet at a bar and schmooze for a couple hours.  Matt Canter was in charge of it this year.  I don't know who is organizing it next year.
