  • Byron B: Fort McPherson, GA. RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, 1971-73, Information Office on the "Phantom Forum" .Wow!! What a neat place. Really brings back the memories. Did a lot of the base tours for visiting groups, and filed tons of Home Town News Releases for folks stationed on both bases. Used to work for (then) MSgt Tom Lokken, and SSG John Small. John eventually married another co-worker, Sgt Kathy Howard. Was there when the first female airmen were stationed at RAF Bentwaters (a lady by the name of Sharon Butler who worked in the hostpital). First Sergeant of the squadron was Herman Schnell, who had been a First Sergeant since WW II. Wing Commander when I left was Col Duane Weatherwax. Still in harness (can't seem to get the uniform off), doing print and broadcast journalism for the Army here as a Master Sergeant (hoping for Sergeant Major). Really enjoy the web sites. Hope to be a regular visitor. Would like to hear from old friends who were there with me. Feel free to drop a note! 8/12/99

  • Art Bailey: RAF Alconbury, 1975-77, 10th CES/ Fire Protection Branch..at both the structural station and at the flight line crash station. I am also interested in anyone who served there during those years who also served in the Weather Det in the smaller tower, right by the crash station and sharing the space there with the fire alarm room. One of the Fire Chief's there was MSgt Johnnie B Flowers, a great man! Also looking for Sgt Ralph Ledford, Sgt Ray Kawa and the civilian cook who fed us so well in the crash station mess hall. Does any body remember the Corby Commandoes? The birdman who use to fly a hawk around the flight line, he drove a mini station wagon with speakers on it's roof to scare off the birds. I could go on & on here. Lot's of great memories. I hope to find someone who was there during those years too! Does anybody know where I can get an RF-4C model with all the markings of our old base, 10th TRW? I love history too and I will enjoy comparing notes and hearing from any of my fellow brothers and sisters who also was there no matter what year(s). After all, I followed in your footsteps and I respect that! I'm looking forward very much to writing to whoever wants to talk with me. I have just joined this web site. I have enjoyed the pictures, what a change, and not a good one in the most recent pics. 6/23/02

  • Scott Baldwin: Golden Valley, AZ. RAF Woodbridge, Jan 1977-Jan 1980, Fire Department, A Shift. Your site has stirred up a lot of fond and wonderful memories for me. I truly cherish the time and experiences that I had while in England and at RAF Woodbridge. I lived in Ipswich for about a year, when they won the Soccer Championship (FA Cup I think it was called). I still have the scarf. Then I moved to an old mansion house outside of Woodbridge. All of the people there were so friendly and nice and I think of it all often with joy and a smile. Thank you so much for providing me a way to relive these fond times once again. 6/10/99

  • Jack Barker (JFS): I have just visited your web site for the first time and found it most interesting. I am contacting you in the hope you may be able to inform me if there is a similar site for RAF Lakenheath. I have many friends from there who served with 492nd, 493rd, 494th, & 495th Sqns, both on F-4D's and f-111's. I was a Cop from Sheffield who made regular visits to the base and a founder member of the "48 Club" Robert E Messerli was base Commander, Col Jim Salminen 494 Cdr, Ed Heit 494 Ops. 7/2/00
  • Kevin Barnes: Fareham, Hants, UK. RAF North Front, Gibraltar, 1982. I am trying to locate an old friend of mine named Michelle (sadly I can no longer recall her surname) who was an Air Traffic Control (assistant?) in the RAF. I met her in 1982 in Gibraltar and we had some terrific and not so good (down to me) times there when I was in the Navy, based at RAF North Front for some months. She was in her early twenties in '82, fair haired and just over 5 feet tall. Very articulate and bright, hailing from the Norfolk area, possibly King's Lynn. Anyone have any ideas where she might be? I'd be immensely appreciative. Homepage 1/15/02

  • Paul & Lucy Barnett: Eugene, OR & Ipswich. RAF Bentwaters, 81st Security Police, 1966-70. Lost this site for a year. Sent to Wheelus TDY in June 67 for 6 day war and in May to France to close bases. I can't believe that I don't know anyone on your pages after spending four whole years there. Still, it makes facinating reading. Great site and I promise not to loose it again. 6/19/99
  • Robert A Barr: RAF Bentwaters, 1977-79, Base Data Processing Center operating an old (ancient, by today's standards) Burroughs B3500 computer, while Col Rudy Wacker was the base commander. For about the last 10 months of my stay there, I lived in a little farmhouse with an address that people still don't believe: Valley Farm Cottage, Near Bildeston, Near Hadleigh, Near Ipswich, and believe it or not, a letter sent to this address actually made it in about a day. Anyhow, I found these websites via a search engine, and I'm pretty surprised to find so many people still interested in the history of the twin bases. A friend of mine I met while I was there sent me a newspaper special edition covering the closing of the bases, and somehow I managed to lose the copy he gave me. This was about six pages of newsprint, covering mainly the last 20 years of the bases' operation. Would you have any idea where I might find another copy of this, or a photocopy of a copy? Sorry to bug you, and I'm wondering if you're even familiar with this piece of newsprint. 4/17/02
  • Bob Barrett: RAF Wethersfield, Oct 10, 1960-Oct 10, 1963, 20th TFW, . Am really impressed with quality of your web page. TDY to RAF Woodbridge several times during this period and am somewhat familiar with RAF Bentwaters. Please check my pages at RAF Wethersfield. 7/16/99
  • John Barrett: Minneapolis, MN. Martlesham Heath, 1974-76. Your pictures of the deserted site are sad testimony to the good times I had there. It was a communications site (microwave, tropo scatter and AUTOVON) for NARS to Greenland and beyond and gateway to the continent. Local lore (because we were secret...) had it that we were a RADAR site, some kind of secret atomic site and lastly... an underground submarine base. Nelson, I can only say that I'm glad someone else was doing the toilets! The buildings in your pictures were as Nelson spelled them out. We were, for all intents and purposes, self-sufficient. It was technically remote duty under AF terminology. I can still remeber trout for breakfast in the 5-table dining hall. Anyway. Great Site! 4/14/00

Remember all the talk surrounding the UFO crash and witchcraft? 1/23/01 Some of my greatest memories and moments of my life are from that base. SSgt Robert A Ward was the flight chief. I teamed up with the great Ken Hagge as the two best desk sergeants the Air Force has ever seen!! We were a great team. (Sorry, Tony Congi). My other great friend was patrolman David "Goose" Bishop. Never forget the "Blue Max"!!! Please you guys, never forget the party over Haley's house and seeing (unforgetably)David "Stick" Stickler in his underwear with those pimples on his butt. Let's don't forget "Fabian" either. Ken married Jackie at RAF Bentwaters (on her lunch hour). God bless them both. Hey Ken, let's do some huut doogs, some nachees and a cuuke. Maybe Jackie can set me up with her friend, Fawn! I will never forget the comradarie we had with each other. I am always thinking of the 81SPS. I hope to hear and see some of you in the near future. • Marvin T Blair Jr: Apison TN (Chattanooga TN area). Great site. I'm looking for members of the 1625spt Sqdn, (MATS) RAF Mildenhall, Gate Way To The UK or least it was in early to mid 60's. As I was an Air Craft Mechanic, a lot of the people on this site must have flown on Air Craft that I have worked on. I guess I did everything right as you are still here. 2/12/00
