The Course Consists of Theory Classes Only

:Course:   INF799   IS Research Project

Purpose

IS Research project has been divided into two parts and will run for a full year, that is two semesters? The first part, Research Methodology will be done in the first semester and is a prerequisite for the Research Paper, which will be done, in the second semester.  Both courses are compulsory

Research Methodology

This compulsory course explains different approaches that can be used for research in Information Systems and gives practical advice with respect to carrying out limited research projects. It also assists students in selecting suitable research topics and writing research proposals in preparation for the research project, which they will do in the second semester.

The Research methodology course considers the various research paradigms including the interpretive, positivist and critical realism approaches to research in the Information Systems. Briefly, qualitative and quantitative approaches of analyzing data are presented. The format of the research proposal is explained. The course culminates in a research proposal, which is executed as the research project in the second semester of the year.

Research Paper

Mini dissertation will be submitted to the examination board , based on any Information Systems topic that the student will have chosen in semester one.

 Outcomes:

The student will be able to:

a)       Choose the right paradigm for research in Information systems.

b)       Choose the right, either qualitative or quantitative approach to Information systems research.

c)        Choose the correct methodology and research design for Information systems research

d)       Write a scientific paper (academic paper), which follows the same format as many journal articles found in the field of Information Systems.

e)       Chose a research project, write a research proposal and justify the need for research in the chosen area of study.

Critical course outcomes

On completion of the course students should be able to:

1.        Link all the courses studied in the IS program from undergraduate to honors level and use the theory learnt to do a research project.

  1. Critical research skills required for further studies either at Masters or PhD level in the Information Systems field.

Topics Information Systems as a Science discipline, IS Research Paradigms, Research Approach and methodology, write a research proposal and the structure of the dissertation.

Assessment:             Submission of an Academic paper, proposal and mini dissertation.
