 PhD Proposed Research Title:

The use of Ontology in software agent-mediated electronic markets: A romantic approach to Information Systems Development.

OR:

An Ontological Approach to software agent-mediated electronic markets development.

   ABSTRACT

Information systems and agent-mediated electronic-markets in particular have been criticized for their lack in flexibility and content richness. The problem has been traced back to the development stages of these systems. Current ISD approaches are mechanistic, that is, they lack a way of capturing the humanistic nature that is inherent in a socio-technical environment such as agent-mediated electronic-markets. To address this anomaly, researchers have introduced ontologies in their development methods. Like many maturing fields, the ontology field has faced problems of definition and a systematic method of incorporation into information systems.

Starting from a set of differentiated ontology frameworks, the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic nature of ontology is used as a base for developing a general ontological framework that is needed in agent-mediated electronic-market systems development. A qualitative and interpretive approach and Grounded Theory as a method are used. A definition of ontology as used in information systems, a framework of components that make up the ontology and a methodological approach to incorporating ontologies in ISD are the expected outputs of this study.
