Concerning Spells learned from Old Spellbooks:

Each player may have the opportunity to find some old spell book, whether it be from an old vault, or the remenants of some wizard who was slain in the course of the adventure. These are the rules associated with the use of those spellbooks.

1. Remember, that all spellbooks are trapped, and locked by its owner. No spellbooks are simple books, they are vessels that hold the secrets of their previous owner.

2. Each mage must first cast READ MAGIC upon the spell book. When doing so, the mage must place something gold, something platinum and something silver upon the cover of the book. These will be lost into the folds of magic. They must be 100% quality (100% gold, 100% Platinmum, 100% Silver) or the spell will fail with catastrophic effects. (This is a way of adding a physical cost to the research.)

3. The DM then rolls 1d6 to determine how many magical locks the previous owner has set upon the book.

4. The player must devote at least 1 hour of study per lock.

a. Each time the mage performing the unlocking proceedure has a chance of failure.

b. The base failure is 50%.

c. For each level the mage has attained he/she is granted 5%.

d. For each hour he devotes above and beyond the minimum, he recieves an additional 5%, a maximum of 20% can be granted, meaning no more than 4 extra hours will gain the mage anything further.

e. For each level above the investigating mages level that the previous owner has accomplished the mage recieves a -10%. Meaning a low level mage should know better than to mess with a master of the arcane's book. (The DM should give the mage an idea of how old or complex the book is, but should not tell the mage directly if the previous mage was more powerful or not.)

f. Each time the mage fails to unlock a lock, he takes 6 pts damage, and has the possibility of gaining a curse, or other errant effect (DM decided.)

5. Remember, most mages have the same spells, so only a few spells might be learned from each spellbook. Those representing the only spells that the mage does not already know. These spells must then be copied to their own spellbook. Once copied, the spell is erased from the previous book, magically. If the mage wishes, any spells that are left (that the mage already had), he may give them to another mage. However, that new mage must go through the same unlocking proceedure as stated previously, even though it has already been unlocked by his friend.

For example: Dembar is a 4th level mage. He found a spellbook on one of his adventures and has now decide to investigate it. he first casts a dispell magic spell on it while at the same time laying a gold bracelet, a platinum peice, and a silver bead upon the front cover.

He decides he will devote 6 hours to the investigation. For each hour he rolls 1d100. He is fourth level so he adds 15% to each roll. He adds 5% to each roll for the extra hour he devotes. And the DM does not tell him the level of the previous mage. (The DM will work this out later.)

He must roll less than 70% (50%+15%+5%=70%) in order to be able to unlock the spellbook and learn what it has inside.

The DM rolls 1d6 and the result is a 5. Meaning the spellbook has five locks upon it.

Taking a chance Dembar rolls 1d100 five times his results are:

55% 
57%
70%
83%
65%

He failed with an 83, and so takes 6pts damage, and then whatever nasty thing the DM declares happens.

Because he devoted the time, he will still learn the contents of the book, but may be left with whatever the DM decides.


Chance of Learning your new spells: (Taken in part from 2nd edt AD&D)

Mages each have a chance to learn each new spell that they research. This chance takes into consideration the general intelligence of the mage, the level or experience of the mage, the amount of time the mage spends trying to learn the new spell, and if there is a teacher present.

Below is a list of intelligence scores and their initial "Chance to Learn Spells" value.

1.Each level the mage has attained he gains 2% chance to learn new spells.

2.Each hour the mage spends trying to learn the spell he gains 2%.

3.Finding a teacher to learn from adds 10% chance to learn a new spell.

The mage must roll equal to or greater than their total percent in order to be able to gain the new spell.

If he/she fails the spell cannot be relearned until the next time he/she attains a new level.


Copying Spells

Every spell found that the mage wishes to copy into his spellbook, whether it be from a scroll or from another spellbook, takes time to do. If the spell,and its complicated components and gestures are not copied immaculately, there is a chance the spell will fail when used.

The mage must cast a "Read Magic" spell on the text to be copied. He/she must do this for every time he/she reads the text, untill it is completely copied.

The mage must devote 1 hour per level of spell he is copying. This hour may be interupted, and done over the course of many days if needed. For each interuption there is a chance that the spell is incorrectly copied. +1 is added to the intelligence roll for each interuption.

At the end the mage must make a save vs his Intelligence by rolling 1d20. If the result is equal to or less than his intelligece then the spell is copied perefectly. If the result is greater than his intelligence score the spell is copied incorrectly. The spell will fail when used, until it is copied correctly.

The mage may try and copy each spell as many times as it takes to do so correctly. Each time the mage must perform these tasks over.
