CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
This week I review 3 of the best albums of the 90's.
Oasis - Definately Maybe
1994 - While most people will say that their favorite album is the successful follow up to this gem, I think that Oasis were at their best here. The band has a sheer swagger about themselves on this album right from the start with the brilliant Rock n' Roll Star. I don't think anybody could have put it better than Noel did in this song. Live Forever sneers at the grunge tendancies across the atlantic and is surely one of their greatest songs. Every song is an anthem, and every song goes so easily with a couple of beers that you seem to know the words instantly and want to shout them out. The band have mellowed subsequently since this album, and a return to the kind of rock they were playing at this time would in my mind return them to the top of the world. Rating: 5 stars (out of 5) |

Pulp - Different Class | ||||||||||||||
1995 - I originally first bought this album for the catchy single Common People but eventually came to realize the greatness of the whole album. Jarvis Cocker is simply one of the best lyricists in music today. He makes you believe in what he's saying and opens your eyes to the lifestyle that he presents to you. With a mix of keyboards, and synthesizers the band add a slightly different effect to their music in the tradition of Bowie and Roxy Music. But it's still Cocker's lyrics that make the album what it is. On the best tracks on the album such as I Spy, Common People and Sorted out For E's and Whizz, the lyrics transport you into the dirty flat in the slums of London, or anywhere Cocker takes you. Sheer brilliance. Rating: 5 stars (out of 5)
