The information provided by Edith Dorow was from Bill Dorow, the great grandson of this couple. E-mail address: SCTexans@aol.com
Pat served in the Civil War. He and his brother, Columbus C. Wolfe, enlisted
as Privates in Company L, 3rd Arkansas
Infantry, at Latonia, AR on 1 July 1861. Pat was wounded at Capon Bridge, VA
on 4 January 1862, discharged for a
fractured scapula on 16 July 1862. Columbus didn't like the Infantry and
started a cavalry unit and rejoined the fray. William Patton may have
jointed his brother. Beth Thurman says that family legend os that he and
his brothers Christopher Columbus "Lum" Wolfe and Wayman A. "Wayne" Wolfe
and he were all captured at the same time and were confined at U. S.
Military Prison, Alton, IL. They were planning to escape but their brother
Wayne told them that he could not make the escape because he was too ill.
The last they ever heard from him was when he supposedly said "You boys go
on. I'm too sick. I'll catch up with you later when all of this is over."
Beth Thurman heard the story of how the Yankees killed their brother until
her uncle, James Dock Wolfe, found the record of his death of smallpox about
a year after their escape. After the war, the escapees were reluctant to try
and find out what happened to their brother because they may have joined a
"raiding party" after their escape while making their way home and
appropriated some horses and supplies from the Yanks. Supposedly William
Patton "Pat" Wolfe came home riding a white stallion of a very expensive
bloodline and the others also had good blooded horses. "Pat" sold the white
horse. After he left Arkansas and went to Texas, the horse's winter coat was
shed and the horse was a totally different color. It was thought he was
getting rid of stolen or other misappropriated goods obtained while
travelling home after his escape from Alton Prison.
Edith J. Dorrow provided the information about the Pigford family. After
her husband's death, Rebecca's mother, Mary McMillan Pigford moved from
Madison County, TX to Atascosa County, TX about 1875 and purchased 118
acres of land. She brought the three younger daughters and one son with
her: Elizabeth Pigford, born 1855, Mary Pigford born 1859; Martha Pigford,
born 1861; and Jacob Pigford, born 1863. She sold this land and since two
of her daughters had married so she moved to Sand Hollow, Frio County, TX
with Martha and Jacob. About 1877, her son-in law and oldest daughter
Rebecca, with two sons and a daughter, also moved to Sand Hollow. She was
granted 160 acres acres in Sand Hollow. She gave an acre of land in 1882 to
build a school. There is a Mary Pigford on the 1880 census living next door
to the Wolfes on the County website. Mary lived in the county until the
early 1920's when she returned to Madisonville, Madison County, TX to live
near a sister. She lived until age 98 and is buried in The Madisonville City
Cemetery. Her daughter Martha and son Jacob remained in Frio County, TX
the rest of their lives per "Frio County, Texas, a History", published 1979
and "A History of Madison County, Texas, Volume 2", published 1997.
William Patton's sister, Arkansas "Arkie" Wolfe may have married twice, the
first time to an Unknown Carpenter, because the website shows the marriage
of Alfred Valentine Gates to A. Carpenter on 18 November 1879, Friotown,
Frio County, TX. The Texas genealogy website shows both W. P. Wolfe and
Jacob Pigford as original landowners in Frio County, TX. This Jacob Pigford
is the son of Jacob Pigford and Mary McMillon. There is a Jacob Pigford,
born 5 June 1863, died 27 June 1905 buried in Sand Hollow Cemetery.
W. P. Wolfe is on the listing of original landowners; Section 1144, Abstract
851 on file at county courthouse and the
Texas General Land Office in Austin, TX. Je also sold Section 12 to a W.D.
Wolfe, Abstract 1416.
Mrs. R. C. Wolfe claimed Confederate Pension #41524 in Frio County, TX, for
her husband William Patton Wolfe.
There were other Wolfe's in the area (James Allen, born 1824) who Edith J.
Dorow thinks were aunts/uncles/cousin.
Beth Thurman thinks this is James Wolf, the son of John J. Wolf and Mary Ann
Stephens but it's nothing but a hunch.
The 1850 Perry County, AL census does show a James Allen Wolfe, but he is
shown as being born 25 August 1831, not
1824. Still it's still possible since he is known to have migrated to Texas.

Sand Hollow, Texas, a farming and stock-raising community, was near Sand
Hollow Creek seven miles northeast of
Pearsall in east central Frio County. The Sand Hollow school was constructed
sometime around 1900, and in 1906 it had
twenty-six students and one teacher. The schoolhouse also served as the
community center and as a site for religious
gatherings. In 1929 the school and a community cemetery were still in the
area, and in 1948 the Sand Hollow community
had the cemetery site surrounded by a dozen or so farms. The cemetery was
shown on a 1989 map, but by that time the
community appears to have been abandoned. The Sand Hollow Road to the
cemetery runs east off Farm Road 2779.
He was born in Mississippi but his family moved to Arkansas and he appears
in the following census:
The 1850 census, Marion Township, Drew County, AR shows: This is before his
family moved to Bearship Township, east
of the Prairie Grove Community and before one gets to what was the Midway
Community. Information was provided by Beth Thurman, Monticello, AR.
