The Simmons IHRA Race Team has been around for 38 years. The owner and founder of the team is Russ Simmons of Wellington, Ohio. He has two sons that are also on his team, Drake 16, and Derek, 22. Russ is a 5 time American Hot Rod Association World Record holder. Derek also won the High School Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio in 2001 and he also made the IHRA World Bracket Finals in 2001 and Drake did in 2002.
There are three race cars on the team. Russ's car is a 1971 Plymouth Duster. It has powered by a mopar 340 c.i.d. engine and puts out around 420 horsepower. The car is in the IHRA Modified Class. It runs 11.90 at 114 mph. Derek's car is a 1978 Plymouth Volare Super Coupe. It's powered by a 360 c.i.d. engine and puts out around 320 horsepower. The car is in the IHRA Street Class. It runs 13.71 at 102 mph. Drake's car is a 1999 Ford Escort. It has a SMALL 4-cyl. engine. It runs mid 17's in the 1/4 mile.
The team has been in numerous newspapers including the Enterprise, The Morning Journal, The Chronical Telegram, The Norwalk Tribune, and the Plain Dealer. The team has also been featured in multiple websites and magazines.
