"Maxwell Smart." She reached over and hugged him, they kissed, "Congratulations," Max said hugging her and squeezing her close to him. "Yeah, congratulations. My husband is going to kill me. He'll have me shot, I'm a dead duck." The Doctor rustled his papers pretending he wasn't listening. "Oh, Max. What am I going to do?" He gave her an extra comfort squeeze. Max could tell how scared 99 was, and he wanted to tell her that everything would be alright, but he wasn't sure that it was. They both knew what a wild temper Victor had and that he might ACTUALLY murder her, he is extremely jealous. 99 went and got some groceries, this time, Max went home with her in the cab and told her that he didn't care about Victor that he wouldn't leave her (or his child, for that matter). She was so nervous and scared. She opened the door and walked in with her head held up high, and Max followed by her side. Grace stood up, "Mrs. Royale! Mr. Wheel!" "The name's Smart. Maxwell Smart." They left an extremely confused Grace at her desk as 99 walked down the hallway. She got to Victor's office. She turned to Max, "Wait here." "No, I'm going in with you." He protested. "Stay," She sighed, "This will only take a moment." She proudly walked through the door. Hoping that her proud attitude, would rub off on her mental state. "Susan." He said standing up, "I see you got groceries." She set them down. "Yes, I did. And my name's not Susan." She sighed, "I'm 99, and I'm an ex-government agent. And Max Wheel, is Maxwell Smart, 86, my partner. I love him and he loves me." His eyes raged, "What exactly are you getting at?" He stood up and leaned on his desk staring into 99's baby blue eyes. "I'm pregnant, and Max is the father, we got the test from the doctor's today." She gulped and reached into her purse, she held out the papers with a shaking hand, "Here." He took them and skimmed them over and looked up at 99, and calmly said, "Get out." "Victor?" "GET OUT. Go back to Washington, and take your playboy with you. Consider this marriage annulled." She took off her ring and placed it on the desk in front of him. "Good-bye, Victor." And closed the door behind her. Max who was standing outside the door, looked expectantly at her, "Well?" "Let's go back to Washington." She put a hand on her stomach and walked on. Max, now more confused than Grace, followed after her. "Grace, have my things sent to this address." She wrote something on a piece of paper. "Good-bye." "Good-bye, Mrs. Royale." She walked out into the parking lot and Max trailed along behind her, and she explained everything to him. THE NEXT DAY, ON A PLANE BACK TO WASHINGTON… 99 lay next to Max with her plane seat reclined back, and her head resting on Max's shoulder. Max pulled out the phone from the seat, and dialed the Chief's office. "CONTROL, this is the Chief speaking." "Chief? It's Max." "Max? I haven't heard from you for so long, where are you?" "I'm on a plane back to Washington. Do 99 and I still have jobs?" "99's with you?" "Yes sir." "Why is she coming back to Washington, I thought she was married." "Yes, well, it's getting annulled." "Why?" "She had an affair." "99? With who?" "Me." "You?" "Yes." "Well, yes you can come back to work any time you want to." "You wanna hear the good news?" "What good news?" "99 is going to have a baby." "Who's is it?" "99's." "No, I mean who's the father? You or Victor?" "Oh, me. That's why we're coming back." "And that's why the marriage is being annulled right?" "You got it. Look Chief, I'm tired I'll see you when we get there alright?" "Yes. Tell 99 I said Hi." "Ok, I'll do that. Bye." "Bye." And he hung up the phone. He looked over at his sleeping beauty. He stroked her hair. And kissed her cheek, and whispered just before he turned off the light. "I love you." |
