| What can you expect from the counselor?
Your counselor should be professional, honest, and respectful. The counselor should be on time. You will be given information regarding the type of counseling offered. You also will be given information regarding the limits to confidentiality. Your counselor may or may not take notes during the sessions. Periodically the counselor should review the course of treatment with you. Some counselors are much more interactive than others. It may feel strange to be “doing all the talking.” This is not a social setting; friendship rules of engagement don’t apply. What does the counselor expect from you? Common courtesy does apply. You should be on time. If you are going to be late, or if you need to cancel, call the counselor as soon as you know. Don’t bring your children (unless the child is the client or you are getting family counseling). |
