The first contact

So--you have decided to see a counselor, you respond to an ad or check the Yellow Pages or get a referral.  You call (or email) the counselor.

Tell the counselor (briefly) what the problem is;

Ask the counselor















If you make an appointment,

    
- give the counselor your correct phone number so you can be notified
         if a conflict arises.

       - tell the counselor if you need special accommodations due to a
         physical disability.

- if she/he has experience in that area;

- what type of therapy they offer.

- the length of sessions,

- the cost,

- the method of payment.

- If you need testing (for example, a custody dispute), ask if the counselor does that.
