America: Land of the Free?
"Give us your tired, your poor..." on second thought, don't, according to so-called conservative Americans.  Since the early 1900's, Americans in what we now know as "Red States" have been begging for a tightening of foreign immigration legislation.  They feel that people from Mexico are "stealing American Jobs" and that immigration, and I quote Jason Hutchens, a redneck I recently talked about this with, is "ruining the fabric of life in our great nation."  The theory is, since they aren't true Americans, they shouldn't have the right to live here.  True Americans, you say?

The number one thing that the United States doesn't tolerate, apparently, is genocide.  We brought Hitler to his knees during World War II, we funded the stoppage of Pol Pot at Khmer Rouge, Bill Clinton sent troops to Kosovo to stop Slobodan Milosovech, and George W. Bush has our troops in Iraq (reason #3571, Hussein was genocidal, a claim we only heard for a few minutes but a claim once made nevertheless).  But if we care so much about Genocide, why did we attempt to extinguish the Native Americans?  You know, Indians?  When the founding fathers created the United States of America, they envisioned a land where anyone, no matter their religious or political beliefs, was free to make an honest living and raise a family.  But there was one problem: those pesky indians, to whom this nation belonged in the first place.  The resolution?  Genocide.  Until the late 1800's, American soldiers and mercennary citizens were destroying entire tribes of Native Americans.  The genocide of the native americans wiped out nearly 9/10th's of their tribes, and what was left over, well, we gave them reservations to keep them from crying foul down the road.  So while we fight genocide on modern battlefields, we endorsed it on battlefields prior.  Interesting, huh?

Back to the point.  Unless you're a 100% full-blooded Native American, you aren't a true American.  That's just a fact, whether you wish to acknowledge it as such or not.  Your ancestors were immigrants... plain and simple.  So if you are the decendant of immigrants, what gives you the right to dictate whether or not new immigrants today are or are not allowed to enter the United States?  If they truly are "American Jobs," don't they belong to the few Native Americans left standing?  If not, why?  Explain it to me.
Anyway, lets examine the jobs that Mexicans are "stealing."  Because we do everything in our power to stop them from seeking and establishing "The American Dream," Mexican immigrants are forced to work undesireable jobs to make a living.  They sell fruit by the side of the highway.  They work on farms, and even then they perform menial tasks.  They clean bathrooms, bus tables in restaurants... but never have I met a Mexican immigrant more successful than myself.  Why?  Not because I'm better than them, not because I'm more deserving... but rather, because they have never been given an honest chance.
So why do Mexicans threaten American jobs?  You tell me.  Is it because they are willing to work harder and for less money than you?  Is that indeed their fault, or is it in fact your own fault for being lazy and greedy?  In my not-so-humble opinion, they deserve these jobs more than you do, plain and simple.  They deserve just as much of a right to earn an honest living as you do, as your anscestors did.  No child of immigration should ever be allowed to foster negativity towards immigration... it's a disgusting show of American pride.  American pride?  Did I really use such a phrase?  I think that phrase is more sickening than your views towards immigration: American Pride would technically be a love for native americans, but although I've been to countless indian reservation casinos, I've yet to meet one.  Why?  Because of the only downside to immigration.
