What is Reiki?

The word, Reiki, means universal life energy. The art of laying on of hands is as old as the hills. People have been doing it since the beginning of time. It is a natural instinct to put your hands on somebody who has been injured or is not feeling well. For example, when a child is hurt, the child's mother will often place her hands on the injured spot. Human touch conveys healing care and love. This energy is known by many names. It is called Chi in China, Prana in India, Ruach by the Hebrews, and Reiki in Japanese.

This energy is the natural energy used by Reiki practitioners. The Reiki healer has access to this energy in a more powerful way because the attunements he or she receives clear the blockages from the body's energy channels. The attunements also give an increase in the healer's own life energies, and connect the healer to the source of Reiki. This source could be called anything the healer pleases. Reiki is not associated with any religion, so you may call it what you like.

How does it work?

If someone has an injury or illness, then in conjunction with the treatment prescribed by a doctor, the individual may ask Maya to assist in healing. Maya helps to concentrate the energy on the affected part of the body. Maya does not heal anybody. She assists her clients in healing themselves. The treatment or instruction that Maya provides is not medicine, and does not constitute medical advice. In case of serious illness, consult the medical practitioner of your choice.

How did Maya get involved in Reiki?

Maya discovered Reiki through an acting job. She was hired by a murder mystery dinner theater group and asked to create the personality of a woman who's occupation was that of cleansing animal auras. It was a comedy. Her character offered to cleanse the auras for people in the audience. As she was pretending to cleanse someone's aura, information came to her and she would pass it on in comic form, thinking that she was making it up. They responded as if they couldn't believe the accuracy of the information. Maya thought they were just playing along. Several of them contacted the producer and told her how clever she was for hiring a real "psychic". When Maya described what she was doing in the performance, the producer said, "Oh, you were performing Reiki." That was the first time that Maya had heard of Reiki.

The producer took Maya to a Reiki demonstration. Maya then mentioned it to a yoga instructor she knew who turned out to be studying to become a Reiki practitioner. The yoga instructor suggested that Maya work with her, which Maya did for one year. Maya was certified in Reiki levels 1 and 2, Usui Shiki Rhyoha, by Rosaleen Church, a licensed practical nurse and Reiki Master/Teacher, on April 27, 2003. Maya practiced Reiki in partnership with another practitioner for 6 more months seeing approximately 10 clients each month. Rosaleen Church certified Maya in Reiki 3 Advanced and Master Level on October 26, 2003.

How does Reiki help?

Mainly, Maya has assisted people in freeing up blocked energy, sometimes in their physical bodies, sometimes in their emotions, so that they can get on with their lives. For example, Maya was performing Reiki on a woman, and the image of a large white rabbit came to her. After working with many people, Maya has learned not to question the information that she gathers while conducting a Reiki session. She simply passes it on to the patient. Maya told her that she sensed her client was experiencing some conflict, and she was getting the image of a large while rabbit. After discussing it, Maya learned that her patient had a rabbit costume in the attic. This client had a teenager who used to enjoy having Mom dress up in the costume during childhood years. She put on the costume at one of her child's current day functions remembering how much joy and fun it brought in the past, never imagining that her actions would cause distress and even humiliation now. The energy surrounding this tension was present during the Reiki session as well as the image of the large white rabbit and Maya gently suggested that it was time to put the costume back in the attic for good, or at least until grandchildren arrived.

Another of Maya's customers was suffering from a lot of tension in her neck with headaches and pain behind her eyes. While Maya was performing Reiki on her, Maya got the image of a head full of brain tumors, but they were not the patient's. Maya can usually tell whether or not the particular problem that she detects is a physical problem of the patient's, or perhaps something that someone close to the patient is experiencing. The patient told Maya that a close relative had passed away because of multiple brain tumors. Maya told this client that her relative's energy was present during the Reiki session, and that she need not create illness in herself because of the grief she felt from the passing of her loved one. The client thanked Maya for this insight and subsequently made a decision to leave a job in which she had been unhappy for a long time. She took some much needed time off and then pursued a job that was more in tune with her heart's desire.

A woman came in for a Reiki session. When Maya worked on her feet, Maya sensed the presence of gout. When the session was over, Maya asked if she had trouble with gout before. The patient said that she did suffer from gout in the past, that her foot had been bothering her lately, and that she was resisting going back to the doctor. Maya recommended that her patient see her doctor, and the patient agreed. Patients are free to do whatever they wish with the information that the Reiki practitioner offers.
