Class notes for Nov.13, 2002
Passed back tests and we went over them...  I did not include the grade (yet) for the essays, as, for the most  part,  they need to be done over... The video is on reserve at the library, under my name and this course number. It's called 'Schools that Work" from the 'Surviving the Bottom Line' series.

I gave out a study guide with a series of questions to answer as you go through these next chapters.

Identity is a central issue to adolescence, as puberty unfolds, and the former child is faced with changes in his/her body, way of thinking, and place in society. As a child, much of who "I" am is framed by how parents see us, how we compare with siblings, and the way we are seen by friends, teachers and other important people with whom we have face-to-face interactions. As we reviewed in the section on cognitive development, the capacity for self-reflection changes dramatically with the onset of adolescence.

We did an exercise on Identity: how we see ourselves, contrasted with how others see us. Then I tried to move the group in the direction of a discussion of identity, but we didn't get very far.

Assignment:  Read Chapters 10, "Intimacy" Also, we did not get to the discussion of autonomy, so think about what things your parents did that promoted or undermined your development in this area as an adolescent.
Writing assignment:   re-write the test essay on 'The Forgotten Half'...Include  references to the video on 'Schools that Work' as to what could be done to address the needs of these students. The video is on reserve in the library, if you need to refresh your memory.

If you have not yet handed in the complete draft of your term paper, please do so ASAP.  I will have the drafts corrected and on my door to pick up by Tuesday at 1 PM. .
Please return the 'blue book' from the test when you hand in your essay so that I can finish calculating your grade.
