Friday
1/8/04
Please take a moment and send a prayer for beloved 'Friday' -a very special Cali Kit.  1/8/04 Friday was taken to the emergency room.  He had nearly a diabetic coma, and now is on an insulin drip, has enlarged heart, fluid in the lungs and a kidney problem.  His family is awaiting the results of several tests.  Everyone here at Kit's Kats is praying for 'Friday' to have a quick and complete recovery.

Tiff was kind enough to fill me on on the results from some of the tests:
Friday has been diagnosed with ketoacidosis and asthma and was reportedly quite grumpy this morning.  We all know that when our kits are grumpy it's a good sign eh?  He is pretty much stabilized and essentially we are now just waiting to hear the results of the heart doctor's visit after she/he checks out Friday's cardiac symptomology.  If that visit goes well Friday should be able to go home on insulin therapy, and possibly some medication for his asthma, very soon.

I also received a note from Friday's Momlet and she said if all goes well our man Friday will be snug at home on Sunday!  All of us here at Kit's Kats are grateful that Friday is doing better and we hope that he's home soon!  We'll keep you posted!

Friday has taken a turn with his heart he now has been diagnosed with Feline Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy, read the following update....
Friday had a bad episode of heart failure last night, they had to drain fluid off his heart and the vet thought Friday wouldn't make it.  Momlet went to visit Friday today to try to convince him to eat; he hasn't been eating anything, just laying there.  They brought him in wrapped in a blanket and he perked up when he saw his Mom, they left them alone and she was able to convince him to eat his usual "Sunday brunch" which is a mini can of wet food!  When the assistant came in to take Friday back into the ward he made a sad meow at Mom, he hadn't been talking to her at all and he's usually a very loud kitty.  The vet walked back to Friday's area while she was talking to me and was very surprised to find Friday eating on his own this evening, he's a totally different cat!  The news was still sad however, his vet said that once a cat with FHC has an episode of heart failure they usually only live about 6 months depending on how well they respond to the heart medicine.  This was all very sad but the vet assured me that it wasn't time for Friday to end his life with us.  The vet called and said she had another vet in for consultation and he has had very good results with a new FHC medication.  She wants to try Friday on it.  Friday was still eating, couldn't get enough apparently, GO FRIDAY!  The vet is going to try taking him off the insulin drip and start him on subsequent insulin injections, the step that has to be completed in order for Friday to go home to recover.  If Friday does Saturday night and Sunday during the day he may get to go home Sunday night!  Friday must have felt like he had been abandoned in the evil hospital but when he saw his beautiful Momlet he realized he had a reason to live.  We're all keeping our fingers, toes, legs, etc., crossed and prayers going strong for Friday to be able to do well tonight.  We're going to take the best care of Friday we can so he can keep being my Mom's Man Friday and enjoy life to the fullest like he usually does.

Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

There is always hope Friday will out last that 6 month prognosis.  After all, recall my beloved Sasha (who is running around the house with a toy hanging out of her mouth right now) is loaded up with mammary cancer and was diagnosed with only 3-6 months to live back on June 28, 2001.. We are now in 2004 and she is still with me, much to the vets constant denial that this is not technically possible.  Anything is possible when it comes to love, Sasha has shown me that.  And Spaz, beloved Kit of Tiffany (whom is now in the memorial area) also had a prognosis of a mere 3 months and lasted years.  There are such bonds between a pet and owner, a vet cannot realize what strength they draw from one another.

I'm glad to report that Friday went home Sunday night and here is the latest news from momlet!
He's home.  He's pretty skinny and tired but he is eating and didn't give too much trouble with his meds this morning.  The insulin injection is no big deal.  It's the pills and the potassium gel that he's not happy about.  He goes in for a potassium level check on Wednesday and a glucose curve next Monday.  He is very happy to be home but he did not sleep with me last night.  Don't  know if that's because he didn't want to try to get up on the bed or he's a little upset with me.  He did manage to get up on the kitchen counter this morning to drink water out of the faucet (one of his favorite things to do) so I think he's stronger already.

What a little fighter Friday is!  Everyone here at Kit's Kats is happy that Friday is still on the road to recovery and getting stronger every day :)  We're pulling for ya Friday!  * Hugs *
1/16/04 Great News!  The recent report from Friday's check up visit is promising...
Friday is getting better every day.  He still doesn't have his usual energy but he seems to be getting back to his old self.  The meds are being crushed and mixed with wet food which he now gets twice a day.  He used to only get "brunch" on Sundays so he's being totally spoiled but that's OK.  I think I'm handling the insulin injections OK.  He doesn't seem to mind those.  I hope the insulin is actually getting into his body.  Little tiny needle.  He has agreed to sleep with me again, at least for part of the night.  He looks fatter every day.  He passed his potassium and electrolyte test and he'll go to the critical care place next Tuesday for tests for the diabetes.
1/21/04 Updates!
Friday had a check up yesterday and is doing good.  He's put a little weight back on but not too much.  They are only making one change in his meds and that is increasing his insulin to 3 units in the AM and PM.  He's getting back to his feisty self a little more each day.  Becky dropped him off at the clinic yesterday for his check up.  They took him out of his carrier at the front desk and he was standing on the counter.  When he realized where he was he tried to get back into the carrier.  He's pretty smart dont' you think?  The girls at the clinic said they hadn't ever seen that happen before.
So thank you all for your prayers and support from Friday and his family.  Next check up in two weeks on the diabetes.
May Updates!
Friday's labs have been stable and he is doing well.  When I was out in Cali the beginning of March his momlet reported on his constant care and ongoing recovery.  I've not heard anything new, other than his doing well and that is perfect to me! After all it's nice to report good news after his recent scare!  I'll keep you posted should anything develope - but so far so good!!!!                ~ Webmistress Kit~
January 2005 Updates!

Well it's been an up and down 2004 for our man Friday.  He's lost a lot of weight, and has trouble with his back legs (one of them is a bit draggy).  He is on his insulin and other meds and still.. and yes STILL is hanging in there like a trooper!  Playful and loveable he still gives his mom a run for her money!  All of us here at Kit's Kats are glad to hear that Friday is still connected with his inner kitten and wishes him the very best for 2005 !!!
October 14th  2005 Updates
Alas, a sad report for our man... Monday was a plus and good report from the vet, however Wednesday he stopped eating, going to the box and is lethargic.  Vets are baffled after he had such a great report on Monday.  He's currently getting a load of tests done and we're all waiting for some verdict.  It's a tense time in Cali with everyone pulling for our man Friday.

I had the honor to meet Friday in person and he is the most precious, cantankerous, loving, adorable, mouthy, spoiled you name it - kat!  You cannot help but love him!  Send out those prayers!
**Hugs** to Friday and Momlet!
Look! a Young Friday and Momlet!  Sorry Momlet, I couldn't resist showing this fantastic snap of you and your man!
