Without Guam, Ferdinand Magellan could hardly have been the first human to circumnavigate the globe.Through the winter and spring of 1521, his three remaining ships had been on the high seas for 100 days without spotting a single island of significance. Greatly underestimating the breadth of the Mar Pacifico, his sailors were sick or dying and the food was gone or spoiled. Scurvy was rampant; swelling the ankles and gums and killing daily. Biscuit powder was swarming with worms. Boots and sails were chewed up and washed down with water yellow with slime. Rats were caught and sold for food. Wooden planks were cut up into sawdust and swallowed. Circumstances were dire unless they could find a port of call -- and fast.
