Now we're going to work with our 6 - 5.5" squares from Fabric C and the 6 - 5.5" squares from fabric D. First you need to place 1 Fabric C square right sides together with 1 Fabric D square. Now take a ruler and pencil or pen draw a diagonal line (that's from corner to corner). This will be your guideline. In the diagram the black line is your guideline, the red line is your sewing line.
Now do this with the other 5 sets of squares.
Using the line you just drew, sew on 1/4" on both sides of that line. This is also a good time to use the strip sewing method I talked about in the last section. Now using scissors or a rotary cutter, cut on the diagonal line you drew, open them, and lightly press with your iron. You should now have 12 Half square triangles.
Now you are going to place right side together on the 12 half square triangles you just made. Please see the picture below for how they will line up. You will place the opposite colors on top of each other.
Now once again you are going to draw the diagonal line. This will be your guideline. As before sew 1/4" on both sides of this line. Now using scissors or a rotary cutter, cut on the diagonal line you drew, open them and lightly press with your iron. You should now have 12 - 4.5" quarter square triangles.
Oh I just scared myself....I forgot about cutting them apart and I thought I only had 6 quarter square triangles. But I have 12 and that's the right number. Wheeew!!
You may now set these aside and begin working on you 4 - 2.75" strips from Fabric C & D
I have a confession to make...When I use the strip sewing method of making 4 patches I usually never get mine to be the right size. SOOOO...In giving your cutting directions, I gave a little extra fabric to work with when it's time to square these up at the end. I hope you don't mind. You will end up with 12 - 4.5" 4 patches.
Now you need to place the right side of the fours 2.75" strips from Fabric C & D. Using a 1/4" seam, sew all four strips, open, and press. Now from each strip you will be able to cut 6 - 2.75" pieces. See the diagram below.
Now take two pieces, line them up, right sides together, like the diagram below.
Match up the rest of your pieces, sew your 1/4" seam, open and press. You should now have 12 - 4 patches. These will now need to be squared upn TO 4.5". If you are an exact seamstress, I apologize because you will have to cut 1/4" from all sides....But, if you're like me you will have to cut less or not at all.
You are now finished with your sewing for this week. I'll make a deal with you....If you've finished ALL your sewing before next Tuesday, and would like the final instructions for this mystery quilt, you can email me at mbeebe68@hotmail.com and I will give you the link for the final Step. Otherwise, if you don't finish early, you can wait until next Tuesday. LOL
