What is Game Fishing
The Moreton Bay Game Fish Club Ltd (MBGFC) is the oldest established game fish club in Queensland and is affiliated with the state, national and international game fishing associations . Membership entitles you to fish in all tournaments and events conducted under the auspices of the Queensland Game Fishing Association (QGFA),the Game Fishing Association of Australia (GFAA) and the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) .It also entitles you to apply for record captures of those species recognised by the above associations .Apart from your financial contribution you assist the sport of fishing by following the rules and ethics accepted by the IGFA .These rules relate to the number of hooks and the types of rigs which are permiited .
Game fishing is the sport of tag and release angling for certain species of hard fighting fish and sharks .The ideal behind game fishing is to meet the fish with skill rather than strength in a fight where the fish must have at least an even chance of escape .Hence the rules of game fishing are embraced and respected by all game fishermen as a code of behavior rather than a list of technical do's and dont's .In most instances the thrill of capturing a powerful fish is followed by the noble pleasure of releasing it alive after being tagged .
Moreton Bay Game Fish Club promotes tag and release rallies and tournaments which provides vital information to scientific research groups and an opportunity for future anglers to enjoy this great sport . We believe that our club and other game fishing clubs are the way of the future, embracing the "catch and release" philosophy .
Few ports in the world offer the game fishing opportunities that we have here in Brisbane . In Moreton Bay several species of tuna ,mackeral, kingfish ,trevally and sharks are accessable to even small boats and provide exciting fishing on light tackle .Close to Cape Moreton and to Point Lookout are some of the world's finest sailfish and small marlin ( Billfish) areas.Larger marlin, broadbill swordfish and giant tuna are known to inhabit the deeper ocean further off shore and are an exciting challenge to the owners of larger boats .
The MBGFC has several levels of membership ranging in price from $10 for juniors
to $85 for seniors per annum .Members recieve a newsletter which is published
every two months and contains members articles about recent trips , club events
and fishing tips . See also www.oocities.org/mbgfc .
Club members own boats ranging in size from 4.4 to 33 metres and generally fish
approximately 15 kilometers from Cape Moreton or within the bay . It is not
necessary to own a boat to become a member .The club also has powered camping
grounds and accommodation buildings on Moreton Island with nearby mooring bouys
which are available to members only at reasonable rates with the approval of
the secretary .
