Orange Rolls

Ingredients

4 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp grated orange rind
1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp hot water
2 cups sifted enriched flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
juice of 1 orange + milk to = 2/3 cup total

Directions

Melt 2 tbsp butter in a 9 inch round pan.  Blend grated orange rind and sugar.  Add 1/4 cup of the orange sugar mixture to melted butter in pan, blend in water and set aside.  Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.  Cut or rub in shortening until mixture is crumbly.  Add orange juice and milk to make a soft dough.  Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently for 30 seconds.  Roll out to a 10 x 12 inch rectangle 1/4 inch thick.  Melt remaining 2 tbsp butter and brush over top of th dough.  Sprinkle with remaining orange sugar mixture.  Roll up like a jellyroll.  Cut into 12 portions.  Place cut side down on top of sugar mixture in pan.  Bake in a hot oven (450*) until browned (about 20 min).  Remove from pan and serve immediately.
