The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Schmidt. He delivered a single knocking in a run in the 1st inning, doubled which plated a run in the 3rd inning and ripping a solo home run (his 28th of the season) in the 6th inning. Athens kept the scorekeepers busy in the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 7 hits. Athens had a total of 20 hits for the game. Mays(7-8) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Dwight Gooden(2-3) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Athens offense and allowed 14 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. |
