Joe Torre cracked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Christy Mathewson tossed a complete game as the Bat Cracking Bombers topped the Brentwood Bearcats by a score of 13 to 6 at Tiger Stadium. Torre was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He lined a one-base hit which was good for two runs in the 3rd inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 12th of the season) in the 6th inning. Bat Cracking rapped out 10 hits for the night. The win was credited to Mathewson(10-5) who went the whole way allowing 6 runs. Herb Score(7-6) was the loser. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 6 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. 'Torre led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Mathewson said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.' |
