Production Figures
I guess many of you have had the thought like; “Hmmmm, I
wonder how many 280S like mine there are left in the world today.”. At least
this thought has crossed my own mind. Of course there is no way to gather
information from every nation in the world to make an accurate record, but
near-estimates can be made. The following production tables are more and less my
own estimates, but they are based upon actual total sales in Germany and number
of vehicles on file in Germany for the years 1986, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995
through 1999. Nearly half of the total production was sold in Germany so by
knowing these numbers one can estimate the evolvement for the world. The
information below should not be taken literally or too seriously and should just
be viewed for what it is or; “pure estimates”.
The
German Records
The first table has number of W108/W109’s left in Germany
for the years 1986 through 1999. I don’t have information for the years that are
marked with a star “*”, but by making a graph and looking at the decreasment
from year to year I was able to guess the missing numbers. Later, I actually
found total numbers for the year 1992 and 1994 and my estimates turned out to be
quite accurate.

The next table has total production figures for
each model and the total sales in Germany. By looking at the total sales % in
Germany and the number of vehicles left in the same country in the year 1986 one
can make estimates of how many vehicles where left in the world in
1986.

estimate
By looking at the total sales % in
Germany and the number of vehicles left in the same country in the year 1986 one
can make estimates of how many vehicles where left in the world in 1986. Also by
looking at the envolvement in Germany it is reasonable to expect similar
decreasment in number of vehicles from year to
year.
