I'm not naming this ride, "Ride to Morgan City", because I know everyone will go, "Why?". That raised new US 90 is the problem. If people would be on ground level and see what a neat town Morgan City is they would want to come here. But, instead, they whiz through 12 feet above it all. I got off and this is what was right there. Take the first or second exit coming down the bridge from the west or the last exit going up the bridge from the east. Go to the Historical District and you won't believe your eyes, erasing, at least some of what you have previously thought about poor Morgan City.
The Old and Present City Hall
Now you know about Brashear and why the Avenue was named
Down the way is a city park with gazebo or bandstand. Morgan City? Yes.
I would guess the pink building was a hotel in earlier days. Again you see the second story porches. It was hot inside.
The River and docks are to the right of this picture. The downtown houses functioning businesses and touristy bars and restauants. Some of Morgan City's darker history tells of these bars being the toughest of places.
Looking from inside the seawall onto the street. These gates have been closed many times to protect the city.
The "over the shoulder" shot from the same location. Morgan City, Yes.
Built in 1912. I bet a lot of this was built around then.
I rounded the corner and crossed the tracks, the tracks that go to that raised bridge.
Cool
Rome or Morgan City?
What you expected?
Morgan City has some proud places and it has its industrial side. The oil industry goes through large amounts of equipment. There is a lot of big stuff and it litters the landscape, especialy around the water fronts where transportation is available and the service companies naturally have their bases. This scenerio, unfortunately, has become Morgan City's image to a lot of people. There is more there and what I've seen from my brief visit, I am drawn back for more. The next page features a store. It brought me back to my youth in New Orleans. Hit "Next".
