Thursday morning we met at the Waffle House in Vicksburg. While imagining Ray eating, I'll show you some of the pictures I took of the area last October when I was at Grand Gulf doing my first CW immersion. I had drug the Guzzi along as it is a much better bike for carrying a passenger and I had my wife with me. One afternoon I decided to take a ride into the hills east of Port Gibson and Grand Gulf. I rode out MS 18, one of the roads we would soon be on today.
It appeared to run between the Old Port Gibson Road and 18. It crossed Bayou Pierre, an important landmark during the battle of Port Gibson.
The road gave up an old store and a old bridge crossing Bayou Pierre, making it a pretty good road by personal standards..
After I crossed the bayou I veered left and crossed some high area, I'll call it a mountain. It brought me to MS 462, Old Port Gibson Rd., where I stopped. I heard a screaming engine coming down the twisting road. I aimed and shot without havig a subject. Somehow I centerpunched the photo below. You never know what you'll find on these seemingly quiet, lost roads.
Heading back toward Grand Gulf, the house with the green door appeared. I didn't see anything special about it besides it was obviously old and had a green door. I caught Ray taking its picture this time. I guess its that mysterious green door? A portal?
Back to the Vicksburg Ride: After eating waffles we got on the bikes and headed on down toward Port Gibson through loess canyons that separate the towns west of US 61.We rode out to check out the river and stayed there a while.

The fact that the river narrows here and cannot accomodate two long barge trains means one must stop and wait. Notice the train like signal on the right.
Our guide took us by the power plant. Those cooling towers are always impressive.
We headed toward Port Gibson, decending into the Bayou Pierre Valley.
Bayou Pierre near where Grant crossed during the Battle of Port Gibson.
Wonder if he took a break at Wildman's?

How can you resist a road by that name?
Old Port Gibson Road is the way to Utica, one of Grant's stops. Imagine the look on his face if that crotchrocket was coming at him. Imagine the rocketeer's face if he topped a hill and had Grant and company coming at him. Time travel and parallel worlds could exist. Be careful out there.
We rode into town and ate at Grant's Restaurant. I wasn't hungry being too eager to eat. There was one thing in Port Gibson I wanted to do. That was to take some pictures of Confederate statue at the courthouse. I took pictures and had to listen to comments from the peanut gallary, such as, "I'm glad the statue only has four sides". I didn't time their lazy forage across Grant's lunch plates. I gritted my teeth anticipating the rest of the afternoon.

Ray posing in front of the PG Confedrate Monument. Which reminds me, General Vorn Dorn, a home town hero is on the statue. He may have been an "up and coming"General Forest type if he hadn't gotten into a little trouble with the ladies. Read about General Van Dorn HERE.
