Abstract
Research has shown that for the most part, people have little skill in being able to detect deception.  It has been shown, however, that certain factors such as training and experience can improve these skills.  This research examines the effect that the gender of the deceiver and detector have on the level of accuracy as well as how an increased cognitive load effects accuracy.  One hundred and eleven people watched a videotape of people lying or telling the truth and tried to detect the deceivers.  Another thirty-three participants watched the same tape with other cognitive tasks involved.  Statistically significant data gave compelling evidence that same-sex detection is more accurate than between gender detection and that an increased cognitive load effects overall accuracy.
