How do I join a fraternity?
Each fraternity runs its own recruitment events on its own schedule. The best ways to join a fraternity are to contact them using the information provided on this site, come to activities night organized each semester by the SSMU or to simply approach a fraternity member with your questions.

How do I join a sorority?
Every fall, the Panhellenic council, which governs all sororities on our campus, organizes recruitment. This process allows women to meet members from each organization and make an informed decision. For more information please see the Panhellenic website: www.oocities.org/mcgill_panhellenic

Are Fraternities just like the ones in Animal House?
Okay, nobody likes stereotypes. After the showing of certain movies fraternity and sorority members have been categorized as partiers, irresponsible, and abusive. In reality, Greek letter organizations are value-based organizations dedicated to the development of character and life-long friendships.

I'm concerned about my grades...what impact will joining a fraternity or sorority have?
Students often find managing their time difficult when moving from a highly structured high school environment to the freedoms of university life. Fraternities and Sororities assist in that transition by offering scholarship programs including study partners, mandatory quiet or study hours, and time management workshops. It's also a great asset to be able to access the network of other members who already know how to access university resources like libraries, special study areas, computer labs, and academic advisors.

What about pledging or hazing?
All new fraternity and sorority members have an orientation period. This is a great time to learn about the university and the fraternity or sorority. ALL FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES OPPOSE HAZING. In fact, all members have signed contracts stating this fact as well. Fraternities and Sororities use the orientation period to instil a sense of responsibility and commitment into the new members- its when the basis of all the new friendships begins.

Who is actually in charge of these fraternities?
Members are elected to officer positions to manage day-to-day operations. Officers are assisted by committees composed of members within the chapter and alumni acting as advisors. Most fraternities and sororities are part of a national organization which offers support, advice and direction to the members by paid and volunteer alumni. In addition McGill has the Inter-Greek Letter Council to coordinate the sororities and fraternities with the university itself.

Does it cost a lot?
Each fraternity and sorority supports itself by the dues collected from its members. If housing is offered, the price is usually very competitive for a downtown Montreal location. A variety of payment plans can usually be arranged.

This sounds like a huge time commitment...
Participating in a worthwhile activity is always an investment of time. Research has shown that involved university students are more likely to graduate and report greater satisfaction with their university experience. Fraternities and Sororities help members learn to balance academic, work, campus involvement, and social commitments.
