Course Description
HOME
In English I, the student will employ comprehension and interpretation of the short story, the biography, the autobiography, the poem, the drama, Greek and Roman mythology, and the novel.  The author's message, the structure of the literary work, and the relationship of his thoughts to those of the student are considered.  Through thinking and talking about ideas he has read, the student will learn to translate literature into life.  Specially designed reviews are included which anticipate mandatory tenth-grade Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) testing.  Emphasis is on grammar and its function in writing.  Students are required to read three outside novels.

Honors English I covers the same material as English I but moves at a faster pace.  Students are required to complete one additional novel as outside reading and are given writing assignments designed to show comparisons and contrasts between novel characters and the students.  In addition, students in Honors English I are required to work in groups and complete two group projects.  Students being considered for placement in this or any honors class should possess reading and comprehension abilities above grade level and have a willingness to make the extra effort required.  They should also be able to use well the grammar and mechanics taught through junior high.
