Seventy-four fire stations and some 1,500 volunteer and permanent firefighters in the
Transalpine Fire Region protect the 500,000 people living and working in Canterbury and the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.  This area covers approximately 6.4 million hectares, including Aoraki (Mt Cook) and the spectacular Southern Alps, the scenic Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers, the ancient forests of the West Coast, the productive paddocks and pasturelands of the Canterbury Plains, the rich seas of the Pacific Coast between Kaikoura and Timaru and the dormant volcanos that form beautiful Banks Peninsula.

As assistant fire region commander (fire safety),
Mark Chubb oversees the design, development, delivery and evaluation of fire safety programmes for this diverse region.  A truly dedicated team of specialist staff and committed firefighters make the programme work.

Mark is a post-graduate student of
public policy at Victoria University of Wellington and holds a bachelor of science degree in fire science and urban studies from the University of Maryland.  He is a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and formerly served on the Institution's branch executives in the USA and New Zealand.

Mark is a member of the
