Observe proper grounding procedures when installing a CD-ROM drive.

step1. Remove the cover from the computer. Use proper anti-static procedures.

step2.(optional) install any mounting brackets necessary to install the cd-rom drive inside the computer.

step3.Check what interface the cd-rom drive uses (IDE, EIDE, SCSI, or proprietary). Set the appropriate master/slave, SCSI ID, or termination setting depending on the drive interface type. Refer to the documentation included with the cd-rom for the proper configuration.

step4.( optional ) Install any interface adapter into the system. If using a sound card. Set any interrupt, I/O address, or DMA channel as necessary ensuring these settings do not conflict with any other decive or adapter installed in the system. Refer to the documentation included with the adapter.
Before installing an adapter of any type inside a computer, you should know what interrupts and I/O addresses are being used by the devices and adapters already installed. If you do not know this information, go to the RUNNING MICROSOFT DIAGNOSTICS or USING WINDOW 95'S DEVICE MANAGER or use software you have available to obtain this information. Make any notes regarding installed devices and the interrupts and I/O addresses already used.

step5.Install the cd-rom drive in the computer. Keep in mind the IDE interface cable connection may be short in length.

step6.Attach the power cable to the cd-rom drive.

step7.Attach one end of the interface cable to the cd-rom drive. Verify that the cable's pin 1 on the cable attaches to the drive's pin 1. The drive's pin 1 is sometimes hard to detect because the connector is black. Look very carefully for an etched arrow on the connector on the drive. Some drive manufactures place a drawing on top of the drive that illustrates the proper orientation for the cable.

step8.Attach the other end of the interface cable to the motherboard or adapter interface connector. Verify the cable's pin 1 connects to the cd-rom drive's pin 1.
step9.Power on the computer, verifying that no POST error codes appear.
