The Scarlet Letter Project
			Due October 8th
		The project for The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is to write a 5 page typed thesis paper.  We will be adhering closely to the rules of the thesis paper and this essay will reflect all that you have learned about writing them this year.      Please consult with the outline if you have any questions about wha is required when creating this thesis. Here are some possible thesis topics for your essays: 1. Explain what is wrong with Puritanism or the theocracy that runs the society. (Some research involved.) 2. The destructive power of guilt as displayed in the actions of the protagonists. 3. Hester as a modern woman who is trying to raise her child alone while supporting herself. 4. What ______ did and why they did it. 5. The use of symbolism in the novel. 6. Comparisons between the author, N. Hawthorne and the character Arthur Dimmesdale. 8. The corrosive force of revenge as seen in the character of Roger Chillingworth. 9. The power of forgiveness in the novel. 10. Hester as a fool for love, Dimmesdale as a hypocrite and Chillingworth as a jealous monster.
