McKenzie Towne Dog Owners | ||||||||||||||||||||
The McKenzie Towne Dog Owners is a small but dedicated group of dog owners and animal lovers who organized to increase the doggy fun factor in McKenzie Towne and area. We want to increase the profile of responsible dog owners within our Towne and to gain a off-leash area. We feel McKenzie Towne and the surrounding communities would be well served if we had a dedicated and secure off-leash area. We are in the process of lobbying the City of Calgary; hoping to convince them that a 'Dog Playground' is just as useful and important as the many Tot Lots in the area. By our estimate, approximately 35% of households have canines. This is a large percentage of our community. To date we have support, in theory, of the McKenzie Towne Council. Keep tuned for progress with the City of Calgary. Our vision of the park consists of a fenced and secure stretch of land large enough for the dogs to run and play together without worry or concern. This will be a place for both humans and animals to gather and socialize. We may in the future begin to solicit for items such as park benches, an agility course, and various training activities or classes - but basically the direction of the park is up to the citizens of McKenzie Towne and area...once we get the land, there is no limit to what we can do! It is also our hope that administration of the park would be turned over to The McKenzie Dog Owners. We would accept all responsibility for it - keeping it clean, gardening and weeding, supplying bags and coordinating the pick up of the waste, etc. Not only dog owners should support us - all residents should support us. This way there will be a place for dog owners to take their dogs and have fun responsibly. We support the notion that dogs should not be running loose on the playgrounds - they need a special area. Furthermore with the increasing popularity of BARF and Raw Food diets, dog feces can pose cross-infection risks of toxoplasmosis, salmonellosis and E.coli infections to immuno-compromised individuals such as the children and the elderly. If you would like more information, or would like to become a member of the McKenzie Towne Dog Owners, please email us. Membership is free, you will be added to our email list and included in any activities or fund raising events we have planned. We are also actively recruiting volunteers to help us on our quest, so if you would like to volunteer your time or particular area of expertise we would be very happy to hear from you. |
