Mission Statement
I decided to spend some time doing cross-cultural mission work because of a deepening realization of the many, many blessings God has given me in my life, and because of a desire to serve God and act on the question, "What is your response to the blessings God has given you?"

Two passages that I have read have challenged me to think about this question, and they provided the motivation for me to explore Christian-based volunteer work.
1.)  THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS:   Matthew 25:14-30 (Full Text)

God has given me so many blessings in my life:
                S
upportive and loving family and friends
Good health and access to good health care
                Unlimited educational opportunities
                Emotional and financial security
                Freedom, of every kind
                Faith

And this is just the beginning of a long list...  The parable of the talents challenges me to put all the gifts God has given to me to good use, and not to bury them under fear, laziness, or insecurity about how my efforts will be received or what the results will be.  God gave me these blessings, or talents, for a purpose, and I can trust Him with the results. In the Bible, He very simply askes me to use these gifts to love Him, and also to love those around me (Luke 10:27).   Also, to act justly, to love mercy, and walk with God in humbleness (Micah 6:8).
2. CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS:  The Principle of Stewardship

This is an exerpt from, Ten Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teachings, by William J. Byron,  (http://www.americamagazine.org/articles/Byron.htm).  The Catholic Social Teachings challenged me to consider social justice and how I should respond to justice issues.  This quote also talks about my responsibily to use the talents God has given to me.
"The Catholic tradition insists that we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of Creation.

The steward is a manager, not an owner.  In an era of rising consciousness about our physical environment, our tradition is calling us to a sense of moral responsibility for the protection of the environment -- croplands, grasslands, woodlands, air, water, minerals, and other natural deposits.  Stewardship responsibilities also look toward our use of our personal talents, our attention to personal health and our use of personal property."

                                  MY PERSONAL MISSION:

-- To encounter other people and cultures with an open heart and respect for their lives and traditions.
-- To be present to and listen to those people who are marginalized by governments or society.
-- To build relationships of love, respect, and mutual sharing with the people I encounter.
-- To serve all people: because it is a principle of my Christian faith, and because it is work that is personally fulfilling to me.
-- To always have a heart and mind open to learning from the people around me; and to always have a heart and mind that is searching to deepen my spirituality and faith.
-- To share my experiences with my US community in openness and gentleness.
1 Peter 3:15 -- "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."
