Ellen and Bill Sterett, 1944

Ellen and Carol

I learned a hard lesson my senior year.

I am very near sighted and have to
wear glasses to see.  Because of
vanity, I would only wear them
in class to do the required lessons.
(no colored contacts in those days)
I came home from school early
in my senior year and told my
mother I had lost my glasses.
She told me she did not have
the money to replace them and
suggested that I go downtown to
the optometrist and see what
arrangements I could make.  He
was located close to the Elks on
Evens Street.

I did have my prescription so he
said for $20.00 he would replace
them.  I told him all I had was $1.00
a week allowance so he agreed to
make my glasses and give them to
me if I would bring him a $1.00 a
week for 20 weeks!!!
That was what I did.  No movies
or popcorn for me.

The lesson I learned was to
ALWAYS look in the lost
and found at school first.  The
last days of our senior year we
were told to see what was in the
Lost and Found and, behold,
I found my old pair of glasses!
