The best way to get started on genealogical research is to sit down and start documenting everything you already know about your family.  From there you should speak to all of your living relatives and try to gather everything they know about the families past.  Sending a letter along with my Christimas cards asking everyone to included what they can in a letter back to me has always worked quite nicely.  Make sure you have a suitable place to document all of the information you gather.  There are a number of programs available for your PC that will do the job nicely. 

When you have compiled all of the information you can gather from living relatives you can begin researching and verifing all of the unknowns.  I use the internet extensively for this purpose.  There is a wealth of information available from people, mailing lists, and heritage societies.  Click on the links below to see some of the many sites I have used and found helpful over the years.

Lastly, don't give up hope.  You will encounter road blocks along the way, but your persistance will pay off.
