King was born Michael Luther King in Atlanta, Georgia on Jan. 15, 1929. One of Martin Luther King's three children, Michael was renamed Martin when he was about six years old. After going to local grammar and high schools, King enrolled in Morehouse College in 1944. He wasn't planning to enter the ministery, but when he meet Dr. Benjermin Mays, the doctor convinced him that ministry would be a great occupation. After reciving his bachelor's degree in 1948, King attended Crover Theology Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania winning the Student of the Graduating Class and the J. Lewis Crover Fellowship as well. King completed the course work for his doctorate in 1953 and was granted the degree two years later upon compelition of his dissertation. When King was Married and then became a solid part of his church congregation. King did his first work in the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery, Alabama. He started a 382 person boycott and was arrested. He later overcame violent harasement and his house was bombed. Ultimilty the U.S. Supreme Court declared bus segregation unconstitutional. King and Rosa Parks set the bus problem straight. As president of SCLC, King gatherd thousands of African Americanstogether in Washington King gave his "I Have a Dream " speech. After that King keepy fighting for African American freedom. Soon blacks were treated better. Whites and blacks got along and didn't have to use different theaters, water fountains or other segregated services. Later, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed while standing on a balcony at a local motel with some freinds. He was killed by a rifle bullet on April 4, 1968. |
