Blake's Civil War Story | ||||||||||||
There were a few people from Western North Carolina who were drafted into the Confederate Army. Many of these men had Union sympathies so they deserted the army. They became "Bushwhackers", or men who raided and stole from people who were loyal to the South to make their living. There were lots of fights between "Bushwhackers" and Southerners. A man everyone called Uncle Reuben Young, served in the Confederate Army. One day he was home on leave and decided to take a bath. He had just gotten into a tin tub when his son yelled, "Here come the "Bushwhackers". He jumped out in his birthday suit and jumped into the only place around to hide, a haystack. The "Bushwhackers" stayed around the house for a lond time. He later said that was the most embarrasing and uncomfortable afternoon he ever spent. from Mountain Voices by Warren Moore. |
