Perhaps the most interesting military force to come from the Mountains of North Carolina was Thomas's Confederate Legion, led by Colonal William H. Thomas. Thomas's Legion was made up of Cherokee Indians and white mountaineers. At different times during the war more than 1,000 men served from Eastern Tennessee as far north as Virginia. Their final battle was in 1865 when they surrendered to a small Federal force west of Waynesville. |
