Jennifer's Civil War Story
This is a photo of a straight razor.  It belonged to a Confederate soldier.  The razor is the property of a friend of my family.
Emanuel Hedden was known as Captain Hedden and was married to Miss Betsy Fox a daughter of Robert Fox born in 1785. Emanuel Hedden and Betsy were mentioned many times in the book of Civil War in Western North Carolina,''A Hard Road To Travel Out Of Dixie.'' This is a story my papaw ''Ernest Hedden''  told me.  My great grandfather, Will Hedden, told the story to him. When the Confederates were fighting against the Union in Virginia, there was a man who was in a hot battle.  He was so scared that he was shooting straight up into the air.  The commander told the soldier that "there's no Yankee's up there and there never will be".  My great grandmother  Betsy Fox's brother John Fox was in the Confederate States Army.  His military career began in 1861 when he left his home in Western North Carolina and traveled to Rome, GA., to join the First Georgia Regulars.  Left at home were Fox's wife, Sarah, and their six children.  While Fox was fighting, his wife, Sarah, contracted Pneumonia and died.  Hearing of his wife's death, Fox left the army and returned home to take care of his children.  He was later ambushed and killed by vigilantes for desertion.  The children were split and one of John's children, John Baxter Fox, went to live with his aunt who was my great grandmother.
