There is a legend about Franklin, North Carolina during the Civil War. The Yankee soidiers came down from the North. Some say they were with General Sherman on his march to Atlanta. They had just made camp outside of Franklin where the Nikwasi mound stands. They sent scouts to Franklin, the scouts came back to tell their commanding officer, that they couldn't attack the town of Franklin. They said it was too heavily guarded. Soldiers are every where in every little corner. The soldiers went around Franklin without damaging anything. Now you wonder who the soldiers were that were guarding the small town of Franklin. History tells us every able fighter was gone to fight in the Civil War. Some Cherokee say it was the Nunne'hi. These are spirit people who had protected the Cherokee who lived in Franklin against the Creek Indians in a legend. These spirits are said to live under the Nikwasi mound. The Cherokee in the area say the soldiers the Union scouts saw where Nunne'hi in disguise. They where protecting the town of Franklin again.
